Manchester United have grabbed all the headlines recently with their big money signing of Juan Mata, but Arsenal look set to match them with reports suggesting the imminent arrival of Julian Draxler to the Emirates.

The 20-year-old has been linked with the Gunners since the start of this season and Arsene Wenger was interested in signing him in the summer as well, but Schalke were desperate to hold on to their prized asset for one more season. The German international has once again been linked with a move to the Emirates in January and reports suggest that Draxler is desperate to complete his move in this window as well.

Draxler’s £37 million release clause is valid only in the summer and the Gunners are unwilling to take the risk of losing out on him next season as a lot of clubs are monitoring his situation and are sure to compete for him. Theo Walcott’s injury has forced Wenger’s hand to spend in this transfer market and it is believed that the Frenchman is looking to convert Draxler into a center forward, like he has done with Theirry Henry and Robin van Persie in the past. General consensus is that the Gunners do need one more major signing to sustain their title challenge against Manchester City and Chelsea this season and Draxler could provide a massive boost.

Recent reports suggest that Arsenal and Schalke have agreed a fee for his transfer, and a deal is expected to be announced soon, although it is unclear whether the German club have agree to sell him in this window or at the end of this season. Jan Aage Fjortoft, a former footballer and well know German football expert, broke this report and now nearly every media in England are reporting this.

Arsene Wenger though has refuted this claims and insisted that no deal has been reached between the two clubs.

“That is an illusion. There is nothing happening, honestly no. We don’t need to take players on the flanks – we have 17 players on the flanks.” – The Arsenal manager said.
