According to various reports, it seems that Arsenal fc are preparing a 60 million pounds bid for Jackson Martinez and Juan Quintero from Porto.
In what would seem will be a very busy January for Arsenal, it is being rumoured that the English club are willing to spend 30 million each on both players, despite the more obvious need for signing defensive reinforcements.
Jackson Martinez was a target for Liverpool in the summer, but for reasons unknown, the deal did not go through, and the Reds had to instead settle for the unpredictable Mario Balotelli, a move that has not worked out for them so far. However, it now seems that Arsene Wenger is prepared to add more firepower to his forward line with the signing of the Porto striker. This is a signing that would only make sense if Lukas Podolski or one of the attacking midfielders were leaving the club as presently there is no place for another forward, having recently bought Danny Welbeck and Alexis Sanchez.
The same is the case with Juan Quintero as well, an attacking midfielder for whom there is no obvious spot available in the team as of now. However, there were reports that Arsenal tried to make a last minute move happen for Quintero during the summer, with some even reporting that he was flown to London for signing the contract. However, nothing materialized out of it, and it seems the Gunners are back with an interest in him.
While Quintero may make sense on some level, him being young at 21 and all, Jackson Martinez may not be the biggest priority for Arsenal at the moment. Their focus should be on bolstering the defence, where they are presently playing a Left Back in the centre of defence, a position he has never before played in his career.
Arsenal have suffered the consequences of a team that is not tuned to defending with discipline, and along with solving their defensive crisis, they should also find leaders on the pitch that will help keep the team focused on the job.
But then again, Wenger may well decide that attack is the best form of defence!
