Arsenal are ready to bid a huge sum for Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema.

The Gunners are interested in the player for a while now, and have been linked with a move for him time and again. They were especially linked with him in summer of 2013, but ended up purchasing Mesut Ozil instead.

In previous campaigns Benzema had to contest for the starting spot with present Napoli forward Gonzalo Higuain, but since the Argentine’s departure, has had an assured starting spot and has truly made full use of it. The 26 year old French international enjoyed a great season last term and has been equally effective during this time as well. However, reports suggest that the former Lyon man is not happy with president Florentino Perez’s pursuit, albeit unsuccessful, of Uruguayan Luis Suarez, and fears that Real Madrid may target another forward when the transfer window reopens.

Benzema already has 11 goals and six assists in 2014/15 and is a regular under Carlo Ancelotti.

Arsenal purchased Barcelona’s Alexis Sanchez in the summer along with Danny Welbeck, both to reinforce the strike department, so links to Benzema do reemerge as a surprise. However, if the Gunners do end up being successful in their pursuit, their strike department would definitely be one of the most dangerous one in the Premier League, and Benzema would definitely be a big upgrade on compatriot Olivier Giroud, currently out with injury.

Earlier in March, Benzema’s agent, Jonathan Hope, commented about moving to England, notably to Manchester City or Chelsea. He suggested that City would be the prime target, but reuniting with Mourinho makes Chelsea a preference as well.

“I’ve proposed rekindling the interest from Manchester City for Karim. After his fine form in El Clasico I’ve proposed him as a summer target,”said the player’s agent

“Karim would love to play in the Premier League and Manchester City would be his choice of club, however reuniting with Mourinho at Chelsea would also be of interest.

“I know he is watching the Manchester derby with interest however. Manchester United will be a no-go area for the player as he has refused them four times over the years”
The French report also talks about interest from French giants PSG. However, any potential move would not be immediately and could be as late as 2016, as Benzema is being eyed by the Parisian club as Zlatan Ibrahimovich’s replacement.

THT Verdict- Unlikely

The reports in English media outlets claim that Arsenal are ‘preparing’ such a bid. However, their source of things, French paper Le10Sport doesn’t suggest anything like this and only talks of Arsene Wenger’s admiration for the player, which of course, might mean that he can pursue him in the market. Moreover, it is unlikely that the Gunners will spend a huge amount in the winter to get the striker, when their main area of worry is the midfield and the depleted defence.
