Calum Chambers has completed his move from Southampton to Arsenal FC for an undisclosed fee. The 19-year-old defender has signed a long-term contract with the Gunners.
Calum Chambers became Arsenal’s fourth signing this season as he completed his move from Southampton today. The youngster was reportedly signed for a fee of £16m and has signed a long-term contract at the Emirates.
Calum Chambers was promoted to the first team squad in 2012 and since then he has impressed with every appearance he has made. In the 2012-2013 season he made only one first team appearance as Nathaniel Clyne was the first choice right back for his side, but last season he got plenty of opportunities and made 22 appearances in the league.
Chambers has also progress through the England youth ranks and has already made 18 appearances for the England U-19 side. The 19-year-old is rated highly and is expected to break into the national team sooner rather than later.
Earlier Southampton announced the move in a statement published in their website.
“Southampton Football Club can confirm that Calum Chambers has completed his move to Arsenal.
“The 19 year-old joins the Gunners for an undisclosed fee, having expressed a desire to leave St Mary’s after making 25 appearances for the club. “ – Read an official statement.
Reports suggest that Arsenal and Southampton have agreed a fee of £16 million for the transfer of Calum Chambers and the youngster becomes their fourth signing this season.
Despite the arrival of Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle United, Arsenal were in the market for another right back with Carl Jenkinson expected to join Hull City. Moreover, Chambers’ biggest strength is his versatility; the Englishman can play as a right back, center back, defending midfielder or as a right winger. It is believed that Chambers will mostly be used as a center back by Wenger with Thomas Vermaelen expected to leave the club this summer. He will also keep Debuchy on his toes by pushing for the right back role if needed.
Arsene Wenger expressed his delight at having secured this deal and is confident that Chambers will shine for the Gunners.
“We are very pleased that Calum has agreed to join us. The way he adapted to the Premier League last season with Southampton at a young age shows that he has tremendous quality. He has a lot of the attributes that we look for in a young player and I am sure that he will do well with us.” – The Arsenal manager said.
Chambers has thanked his former club for their support so far in his career and is excited to play for a team whose playing style he has admired for a long time.
“I am so happy to be signing for Arsenal. They are a team I have much admired for their playing style, and a team who have been one of the top sides in Europe for many years. I’m looking forward to joining up with my new team-mates today and beginning preparation for the season ahead.
“I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone at Southampton FC for everything they have done for me and for making this move possible.” – Chambers said.
