Arsenal have made contact with Real Madrid regarding defender Alvaro Arbeloa.

The 31 year old has a contract until June 2016 but El Confidencial say that Real Madrid would agree to let the player go if he was to find a new club and offer which suited him. Arbeloa is presently not wanted at Real. The ex-Liverpool defender was substituted in the second half of Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over newly-promoted Cordoba on Monday for Daniel Carvajal, who is already considered the first-choice right-back at the Bernabeu.

When asked about the substitution, Ancelotti defended it by saying that he brought the 31 year old off due to ‘tactical reasons’, but the defender’s substitution was cheered by pockets of the Real Madrid supporters. The troublesome relationship he shares with goalkeeper Iker Casillas is cited as a major factor of the near breakdown in relationship between the player and the club.

Casillas was a well-known and outspoken critic of Jose Mourinho during his time in charge of Madrid. Casillas even found himself dropped to the bench by Mourinho. Arbeloa was a fervent supporter of the Portuguese and proved to be an important player in the current Chelsea boss’s reign with the Spanish giants. This difference in opinion over Mourinho reportedly started the breakdown in relationship

The defender had to apologise recently after ‘retweeting’ a link to a book which referred to Casillas as a ‘tumour on Real Madrid’. Casillas had also earlier liked an Instagram post from a fan which criticized Diego Lopez, Real’s first choice goalkeeper in the last two years, and called Arbeloa a ‘cone’ – referring to the defender’s lack of mobility.

Arbeloa also snubbed Casillas in the tunnel ahead of the Spanish Super Cup first-leg tie with rivals Atletico MadridHe was filmed walking past his team-mates who were starting the game, hugging and tapping stars, which included Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Pepe. When he reached Casillas, he walked straight past and refused to acknowledge his presence.

Arbeloa has appeared in 126 league appearances for Real. Last season, he started 14 games and has now been regarded as a utility player. He has been an important part of the squad and is a good player to have in the team, but no club likes to have a player who creates unnecessary tension in the dressing room.

Arsenal have been reported in the Spanish media, to be interested in the player and have made inquiries for him. There are no doubts over the World Cup winning Spanish defender and the Gunners have shown interest in the player due to his vast experience as well as verstality. The full-back is equally apt at playing on both sides, despite primarily being a right back. The 31 year old’s addition would add depth to the squad. Arsenal have had issues with injuries in the past and the interest shown in the defender doesn’t come as much of a surprise.

However, this is just speculation in the media. Nothing concrete has yet been reported.
