Arsenal FC manager Arsene Wenger has praised Joel Campbell following his good performance against Manchester United in the Champions League.

Joel Campbell signed for Arsenal back in 2011, but work permit issues forced him to join Lorient and then Real Betis in the last two seasons. He did finally get his work permit in England, but the 21-year-old was loaned out to Olympiakos as Arsenal already had a lot of competition for place in attack and Wenger wanted him to gain regular first team action and experience. The Costa Rican forward has been on good form since joining the Greek side and he grabbed the headlines in midweek following his wonderful goal against Manchester United, which provided Olympiakos with a 2-0 lead in the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie.

Campbell expressed his desire to play for Arsenal next season as he believes that he is ready for the Premier League.

“As soon as Arsenal came, I wanted to join them and I believe I am ready to play for Arsenal next season. I have the capacity to play there and I am only waiting for the opportunity. With hard work I can get there.” – The Youngster said after the match.

Now Arsene Wenger has also praised Campbell for his performance against United and is delighted with the progress he has made during his loan spells in the last three seasons. Wenger also hinted at a possible place of Campbell in the Arsenal squad next season.

“I will decide that later. Why not? We bought him to bring him here.

“He was good, convincing going forward [against Man United]. He looks like he has adapted a bit better to the physical side of the European game.

“We always knew that he had the talent to create something special. He did rely a bit too much on that.

“But he’s now been out with three different clubs; he was with Lorient, Real Betis and now Olympiacos. He has learned the toughness of the European leagues.” – The Arsenal manager said in his pre-match press conference.
