Arsenal FC striker Olivier Giroud has insisted that the Gunners will add to their strike force in the summer and that he is ready to compete for his place.
Arsenal are expected to spend heavily in this transfer market and a new striker is at the top of Arsene Wenger’s priority list. Lack of fire power upfront proved costly at times last season as Olivier Giroud had to shoulder all the responsibility. Giroud is presently the only natural striker present in the first team squad, apart from the young Yaya Sanogo. Moreover the London club needs a different option than Giroud upfront for tactical flexibility as the Frenchman lacks the pace to run behind a defence. A host of names have already been linked with a move to the Emirates, including Giroud’s French team-mate Karim Benzema.
The 27-year-old striker, who scored 22 goals in all competitions last season, is convinced that Arsenal will buy a new striker in the summer and insisted that competition in the squad will get the best out of him as well.
“We need another striker. Great clubs have several good strikers, who compete with each other.” – The Frenchman said in an interview.
Giroud is currently competition with Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema for a place in the starting eleven and the former Lyon striker is likely to be Didier Deschamps’ first choice in the World Cup. But Giroud is convinced that he has done enough in the recent friendlies to improve his claim for a starting berth. The former Montpellier striker scored a brace against Norway and most recently against Jamaica.
“It would kind of be a disappointment (to miss out), because I think I’ve done well in the warm-up games.
“But there is a coach and you have to respect his choices. But that’s not my primary concern, nor will it stop me sleeping right now.
“The important thing is to prepare yourself well for the first game and make yourself available for the team and the coach.” – Giroud added.
