Arsenal FC manager Arsene Wenger has insisted that the German internationals are likely to miss the start of the Premier League campaign.
Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski, who were part of Germany’s World Cup winning squad in Brazil, are yet participate in preseason preparations as Arsene Wenger has been unwilling to force them back quickly. The Arsenal manager has now revealed that the German player are likely to miss the start of the season as Wenger wants them to regain full fitness before bring them back into the squad.
“It’s not ideal but the final of the World Cup was on July 13 and when they went back to Germany, they lost a few days for celebrations.
“They played seven games at the World Cup [in addition to] the whole English season. Having the experience of a team that has won the World Cup [always] makes it difficult mentally to come back and be sharp and hungry straight away again.
“You have the choice – you get them back very quickly and you lose them in October, or you give them a needed rest to build them up again.
“They have an individual programme that they follow so they could be very quick.” – The Arsenal manager said.
The Frenchman also expressed his faith in new signing Calum Chambers, who impressed a lot at the Emirates Cup. Wenger believes despite the big price tag, Chambers will come good.
“He’s 19 years of age, he’s a young promising talent and when you’re a manager you believe in the players when you buy them.
“I’m a great believer that we spent a lot of money for him, that’s true but in the longer term it is well spent – that is the most important thing. When a player is bought for a longer period you can never say it’s expensive. At the moment it’s expensive yes but I don’t regret it.
“He can play a major role because in what I observe he has the qualities to impose himself in this part of the team. I believe he can play in defensive midfield and that’s where I see him.” – Wenger added.
