Arsenal FC ended their long trophy drought with a FA Cup win at Wembley, but they might look back at their Premier League campaign as a missed opportunity.

Arsenal started the 2013-14 season with the goal of improving on the form they showed to end the 2012-13 campaign. While few expected the Gunners to contend for the title, they wound up leading the Premier League for 128 days during the season. In the end, they did finish in the Top 4 and won their first trophy since 2005, winning the FA Cup. However, with the points dropped to inferior sides, the poor strategic choices away to direct rivals, and injuries to key players prevented Arsenal from seizing their best opportunity to win the title since the 2007-08 season. Ultimately, Arsenal should look to build on the success of the 2013-14 season, so they can better contend for the Premier League in 2014-15.

The Summer Transfer Window

The transfer window saw Arsenal remove a large number of players off the wage bill. Before the start of the season, Arsenal took goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano on loan from Palermo, center forward Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer from AJ Auxerre, and midfielder Mathieu Flamini on a free transfer from AC Milan. The acquisition of Flamini proved quite valuable as it reinforced that holding midfield position, one of Arsenalai??i??s transfer needs. Acquiring a quality player on a free proved especially valuable given the price for which a target such as Luis Gustavo sold.

However, the pursuit of a starting center forward dominated Arsenalai??i??s summer. Initially, it seemed that Arsenal would sign Gonzalo Higuain for 22 million pounds. However, after Napoli sold Edinson Cavani to PSG, the Italians joined the race to sign Higuain and won, acquiring the Argentinean for 34.5 million pounds.

John Henry, in ignoring Luis Suarez's buy-out clause, not only helped his own team qualify for the Champions League, but may have prevented Arsenal from winning their first title since 2003-2004

John Henry, in ignoring Luis Suarez’s buy-out clause, not only helped his own team qualify for the Champions League, but may have prevented Arsenal from winning their first title since 2003-2004

While the increase in price certainly played a role in Arsenal not signing Higuain, their pursuit of Luis Suarez probably played a role too. Instead of paying 34.5 million pounds for Higuain, Arsenal looked to sign the better value, Suarez at 40 million + 1 pounds. As John Henry admitted at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference, that bid triggered Suarezai??i??s buyout clause. Unfortunately for Arsenal, Liverpool decided to ignore the contract (video here). Ai?? In the end, Arsenal failed to make a major center forward signing and went into the season with Yaya Sanogo and Nicklas Bendtner backing up Olivier Giroud.

Ironically, their North London rivals helped bail out the Gunners (also inspired a particularly creative song from the Arsenal away fans)Ai??. Buying Gareth Bale gave Real Madrid seemingly too many attacking players and possibly a desire to balance the expenditure with a sale. Arsenal benefited from this by signing Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid for 42.5 million pounds. So while Arsenal failed to sign a top class center forward, they certainly hit a home run signing one of the worldai??i??s greatest creative forces, one who represented a significant and unique manner of improvement to the side.

Premier League Campaign

24W-7D-7L, 79 points, 4th place

The Premier League season began with a bad defeat at the Emirates to Aston Villa, 3-1. Anthony Taylorai??i??s horrendous refereeing played a large role in the outcome. However, that did not prevent Arsenal fans from venting their frustration with not only the performance and the result, but also with Arsenalai??i??s ineptitude (and bad luck) in the transfer market.

Fortunately for Arsenal, victories against Fulham and a victory in the North London Derby distanced both the clubs and the fans from the toxic atmosphere apparent on opening day. The signing of Mesut Ozil, after their victory over Tottenham, added to the positive atmosphere. In fact, after the loss to Aston Villa, Arsenal went 8-1-0 in their next nine matches. The unbeaten run came to an end with defeat against a poor Manchester United side, after a midweek win against Borussia Dortmund. Arsenal would go on to win the next three games, bringing them to 34 points earned in 14 games. At this point, Arsenal had a four point lead over Liverpool and Chelsea, and a five point lead over Manchester City, with a game in hand over all three of those sides.

The loss of Aaron Ramsey played a significant role in ending Arsenal's title campaign.

The loss of Aaron Ramsey played a significant role in ending Arsenal’s title campaign.

Arsenal would lose the top spot in the Premier League to Liverpool after dropping seven points in their next three games (Everton, @City, Chelsea). And while Arsenal would win their next five matches, they would lose two important players in that span of matchesai??i??Theo Walcott and Aaron Ramsey. Starting with the draw against Southampton, Arsenal picked up 13 points from their next 11 matches and lost Mesut Ozil in that cluster of matches. All their work to reach the top of the Premier League and maintain that position went up in smoke during this span of matches. Without Ramsey, Walcott, and Ozil, Arsenal attack became stagnant, impotent, and unenjoyable. And if defensive solidity defined the first half of the season, barring the defeat to Manchester City, then openness at the back and vulnerability to counter attacks dominated that 11 game period. This led to quite embarrassing defeats away to Liverpool, away to Chelsea, and away to Everton. Dropping 20 points in those 11 matches ultimately killed Arsenalai??i??s title hopes, though they were able to secure 4th place, winning the last five games of the season.

Arsenal finished the season with 79 points, three points behind 3rd-place Chelsea, five points behind 2nd-place Liverpool, and seven points behind title winners Manchester City.

UEFA Champions League Campaign

Eliminated in Round of 16 by Bayern Munich

Having finished 4th in the 2012-2013 season of the English Premier League, Arsenal had to win a two-legged playoff against Fenerbache in order to qualify for the group stage. They easily dispatched the Turkish side, 5-0 on aggregate.

In the group stage draw, Arsenal found themselves in a group with 2012-13 UCL Finalist Borussia Dortmund, Napoli, and Marseille. With Borussia Dortmund and Napoli in their group, Arsenal faced the real threat of failing to qualify for the knockout phase of the Champions League. Arsenal started their group stage campaign with a win away to Marseille. However, their first real test came in their second group stage match, when Napoli visited North London. Arsenal passed this test with flying colors, eviscerating the Italians in the first 20 minutes of the match.

Arsenal would go on to split a home-and-away with Borussia Dortmund, with the away side winning in both matches. While Arsenal lost the first encounter by going for a goal and the win, thus leaving themselves to a swift Dortmund counter and goal (and some criticism from Arsene Wenger), Arsenalai??i??s risk taking at the Westfalenstadion led to their game-winning goal and a crucial win in Germany.

Arsenal would comfortably defeat Marseille, giving them the top spot in the group going into the final match day. If Arsenal had earned a point at the Stadio San Paolo, then they would have finished at the top of this challenging group. However, Arsenal failed to earn any points against Napoli and finished second in the group. In fact, Rafael Benitezai??i??s curious decision to ease off the gas after Napoli scored the opening goal helped Arsenal reach the knockout stage. If Borussia Dortmund had drawn against Marseille, then a win of any kind would suffice for Napoli. However, a Borussia Dortmund win meant that Napoli needed to win by three goals to claim second place among three teams tied with 12 points.

While Napoliai??i??s failure to win by a large enough margin pushed them into the Europa League, Arsenalai??i??s inability to get a point at the San Paolo led to them having to face one of the group winners in the Round of 16. Arsenal paid a steep price for not finishing top of their group by drawing Bayern Munich.

At the Emirates, Arsenal started fantastically for the first 15-20 minutes. However, unlike their dominant period in their home match to Napoli, this period of dominance did not yield any goals for Arsenal. A red card for Wojciech Szcezsny sealed Arsenalai??i??s fate as Bayern Munichai??i??s patient approach wore down the Gunners. The Bavarians would leave London with a 2-0 victory. Bayern Munich would go on to eliminate Arsenal after a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Arena, despite a man of the match caliber performance from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Domestic Cup Campaigns

League Cup: Eliminated in the 4th Round by Chelsea

In the League Cup, Arsenal started the competition in the 3rd round playing away to West Bromwich Albion. With the likes of Isaac Hayden, Thomas Eisfeld, Ryo Miyaichi, and Serge Gnabry starting (along with a bench full of youth-team players) Arsenal had to go to penalties to win and move on to the next round. Chelsea knocked out Arsenal in the 4th round with a 2-0 victory at the Emirates.

FA Cup: Champions

Sadly for Arsenal, Theo Walcott's convincing performance at center forward ended with an injury that finished his season.

Sadly for Arsenal, Theo Walcott’s convincing performance at center forward ended with an injury that finished his season.

Arsenalai??i??s FA Cup campaign started with a 3rd round match against Tottenham. Arsenal won that match comfortably, 2-0. They dominated their North London rivals who ill-advisedly let themselves get outnumbered in central midfield. However, the game proved bittersweet for Arsenal. In the middle of a surprisingly adept performance at center forward, Theo Walcott ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament. Walcott would miss the rest of the season and deprive Arsenal of their best vertical threat. His injury combined with the injury to Aaron Ramsey would play a significant role in derailing Arsenalai??i??s title campaign.

Arsenal destroyed League Oneai??i??s Coventry City, 4-0, in the fourth round. Arsenalai??i??s 5th round matchup proved much more difficult, as they drew Liverpool at the Emirates. Only eight days before, Liverpool embarrassed the Gunners with a 5-1 win at Anfield. As they had at Anfield, Liverpool attempted to kill the match in the first 15 minutes. However, they did not score, as goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski saved a Daniel Sturridge effort and the Liverpool center forward shot into the side netting after getting around Fabianski. Immediately after weathering the storm, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain opened the scoring in the 17th minute, and Arsenal would go on to win 2-1.

In the 6th round, Arsenal played another Premier League side in Everton, and won 4-1 with two Olivier Giroud goals putting the game to bed in the final ten minutes.

That victory sent Arsenal to Wembley to play the semi-final match against the defending champions, Wigan Athletic. Like the FA Cup match against Liverpool, Arsenal came into this match after another embarrassing Premier League defeat, this time to Everton. After a rather cautious first half, it was Wigan who opened the scoring. In search of an equalizer, Arsene Wenger brought on Olivier Giroud for Lukas Podolski, and the Gunners played a much more direct style. Eventually, Arsenal got their equalizer, as Per Mertesacker headed in a shot from Oxlade-Chamberlain. Arsenal would go on to win the penalty shootout and make it to the final.

The final was filled with anxiety for Arsenal and their fans. After conceding two goals on two set-pieces (and nearly conceding a third), Arsenal gained control of the match. Arsenal leveled the score and needed an extra-time winner from Aaron Ramsey to bring Arsenal its first trophy since the 2005 FA Cup.

Some Things that Went Well

Player of the Season: Aaron Ramsey

Arsenalai??i??s player of the season, Aaron Ramseyai??i??s development into a top class all-around midfielder has given Arsenal fans hope for the future and a sense of ai???what ifai??? as he only appeared in 23 of Arsenalai??i??s 38 Premier League matches, missing more than three months with a thigh muscle strain. His movement, ability to find space, and his technical ability allow him to score goals and create goals for others. His runs from midfield complement the creative abilities of Mesut Ozil and also pairs well with Olivier Giroudai??i??s back-to-the-goal game. He also provides athleticism in midfield and provides value defensively. In many ways, he is Arsenalai??i??s Arturo Vidal. While one could argue that Arsene Wenger sometimes has too much faith in his players, his faith in Aaron Ramsey has paid off.

Signing Mesut Ozil

Arsenal broke their transfer record and broke it to sign arguably the best No. 10 in the world. His ability on the ball, and more importantly his skill off the ball, lifted Arsenalai??i??s attack to a new level. Not only did he open up defenses with his vision and passing, but his willingness to drift into wide positions proved crucial for a side that prefers to player wide players who prefer to operate infield. With his movement into wide areas, he unclogged the center of the pitch, giving more time and space to players like Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, and Santi Cazorla. The biggest problem for Mesut Ozil had to do with the workload he had to carry this season. Consistently playing full matches and no winter break were two things Ozil did not have to deal with at Real Madrid. Combine this with Arsene Wenger regularly playing him the full 90 minutes without a rest, and his wearing down over the course of the season was inevitable. Next season, with a better understanding of the physical demands the club and league will put on him, he should come back with a more productive season for the Gunners.

Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny

While Kieran Gibbs improved the most of all Arsenalai??i??s defenders, the most impressive aspect of the back line was the combined play of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker. In many ways, their partnership serves as evidence for the foolishness of individual awards and team of the year selections. Individually, both defenders have their flaws; however, as a partnership they complement each other, allowing the two defenders to play to their strengths and cover for the otherai??i??s weaknesses. It seemed only fitting that they raised the FA Cup, not as individuals, but as a pair. Arsenal could use another center-back, as they lack one who could effectively step in for Mertesacker. However, for the first time since the days of Sol Campbell and Kolo Toure, Arsenal have a first-choice center-back pairing on which they can rely.

Wojciech Szczesny

Since the end of the 2005-2006 season, goalkeeping at Arsenal has wavered from unreliable to terrible. This season Arsenal can feel confident going forward with Wojciech Szczesny in goal. The Polish goalkeeper has come a long way in his development and has put in some fantastic performances this season. While he has always shown ability as a shot-stopper, he has done well to reduce the number of mistakes he commits. Since he is 24, Arsenal can expect him to continue to develop, as most goalkeepers hit their peak in their earlier 30s. As long as Szczesny wants to stay at the club, it seems that Arsenal have their answer at goalkeeper for the next decade or longer.

Some Things That Went Poorly

Olivier Giroud After November

While the French center forward started out the season well, his productivity declined after a fine first two months. Part of this decline may have been due to Arsenal overworking their center forward; some of it may have been to off the field issues. The Frenchmanai??i??s struggles only increased when Theo Walcott ruptured his ACL. Losing that threat of pace and a player willing to run beyond the Frenchman meant that teams could squeeze higher up the pitch, exploiting Giroudai??i??s lack of pace. Also, losing a player like Walcott meant that Giroudai??i??s back-to-goal game lost an important target. Aaron Ramseyai??i??s injury exacerbated these issues. Going forward, Arsenal should look to strengthen the center forward position. Ideally, Arsenal would sign an upgrade to the Frenchman (Balotelli for example). However, even signing quality depth would allow Arsenal to keep Giroud fresh and/or sit him when he suffers from poor form.

Injuries/Fatigue/Lack of Rotation

While Arsenal finished 4th again, they finished seven points away from the champions, Manchester City. Seeing the impact of Aaron Ramseyai??i??s return to Arsenal at the end of the season, one wonders what could have been if Arsenal had a bit more luck with respect to injuries. Arsenal went long stretches without some of their most important attacking players at the same time. In particular, injuries to Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey, and Mesut Ozil devastated Arsenalai??i??s attack. While Theo Walcottai??i??s injury had little to do with being overworked, the injuries to Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil were likely due to them being overworked. Players like Mikel Arteta and Olivier Giroud also seemed to suffer from being overplayed, and while not picking up major injuries, did have their production decline.

One factor, especially with the injuries of Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil, could have been a lack of rotation by Arsene Wenger. Had Wenger showed more of a willingness to trust the rest of his squad and sit key players against weaker opposition, maybe Arsenal would have avoided some of the injuries that derailed a once promising title campaign.

Poor Strategy in Some Big Matches

The 2005 FA Cup Final, the run to the 2006 Champions League final, the 2007-2008 Champions League campaign all saw Arsene Wenger take a more pragmatic approach in order to achieve the desired result on the scoreboard. During the 2013-14 season, Arsenal gave sides such as Tottenham and Newcastle the football, asking them to break down an organized defense. In the Champions League, particularly in their two matches against Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal strived for defensive solidity before attempting to score.

Arsene Wenger - Arsenal Manager | Arsenal vs Norwich City - Team News, Tactics, Lineups and Prediction

Arsene Wenger has shown a willingness to play for a result, especially in Europe, making his lack of pragmatism against direct Premier League rivals maddening.

In away matches against the Top 5 of the English Premier League, Arsenal abandoned the pragmatism that had defined the calendar year of 2013 for the Gunners. Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Everton scored a total 20 goals in their home matches against Arsenal. Frustratingly, Arsenal conceded many of goals the same way. An opponent would press them in midfield, win possession, and swiftly overload a disorganized Arsenal defense. This blind faith in the technique of his players made the least sense against Liverpool and Chelsea, two sides who struggle to break down organized defenses and need to play on the counter-attack. These defeats certainly played a role in killing Arsenalai??i??s title challenge.

One should not ignore Arsenalai??i??s failures against weaker opposition as well. They dropped 5 points to the worst Manchester United side in 25 years; they lost to Stoke City; they drew to Swansea at home (10 points dropped in total). They also conceded a late equalizer at home to Everton and conceding right after taking a 2-1 lead against Southampton, a total of four points dropped (a total of 14 poorly dropped points).

However, those points dropped to direct rivals and the psychological blow from a few of these defeats could have been avoided if Arsenal maintained the cautious approach that has led to success in other big matches. Next season, Arsenal would help their title campaign by showing more caution against smaller teams (and signing a player or two who can turn a tight 0-0 into 3 points with a moment ofAi??individual brilliance)

The Future

A 4th place finish and an FA Cup constitute a successful season for Arsenal. However, this season does represent a missed opportunity to win one of the more wide-open Premier League title races. Arsenal need to build on the development they have made as a side this season and keep pace with rivals who will look to improve going into next season.

With respect to the center forward position, at minimum, they need to sign a few options who can provide both depth and variation at the position. Ideally, the will sign a center forward who represents a significant upgrade over Olivier Giroud. If this cannot be done, then Arsenal should look to purchase wide forwards who can play off of Olivier Giroud, stretch the pitch vertically, and provide a goal-scoring threat.

Arsenal could also do with an upgrade in the holding midfield role and need to find a right back who can take over from Bacary Sagna (like Serge Aurier of Toulouse).

In general, Arsenal could use more quality depth throughout the squad. Not only would it help to reduce the negative impact of injuries to the club, but more importantly, it may provide Arsene Wenger with a stronger incentive to rotate the squad, as the marginal decrease in quality would be smaller. With Arsenal in four competitions again this season, that increased depth and increased rotation could allow them to progress further in the Champions League and FA Cup and allow them to sustain a title challenge deeper into the season.

While Arsenal do need to bring in players to strengthen the squad, there are sources of internal improvement for the Gunners going into 2014-15. Mesut Ozil will have a better understanding of his teammates and the physical demands of the English Premier League. In all likelihood, his second season as Gunner should see quite a bit of improvement. Players such as Jack Wilshere and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had their development impacted by injuries this season. These two talents still have a long way to go to reach the levels of Aaron Ramsey. Yet, given their potential and their age, their growth next season could further spearhead an Arsenal title challenge. Finally, players like Kieran Gibbs and Wojciech Szczesny, who have had done well this season, have yet to reach their peak.

With money available to improve the squad and with the potential for further improvement from within, Arsenal have the potential to take that next step forward and win their first league title since the Invincibles.
