Atletico Madrid’s promising right-back Javier Manquillo has put his Marseille loan on hold after learning of Arsenal‘s interest in him.

It is now likely that the youngster will join the Premier League giants after the Gunners officials approached his agent regarding a summer move.

French side Marseille were taking the player on loan for the season and had the option to make the move permanent at the end. But interest from Arsenal has put the move on hold as Manquillo is reportedly keen on a move to England.

Spanish daily AS stated that Manquillo wants regular playing time in the top division and wants to leave last season’s La Liga champions as he knows he would remain a cover for Juanfran for some years now.

New Marseille manager Marcelo Bielsa is keen to improve his squad after a lackluster season for the French side and reports suggested that he has his eyes set on Atletico’s wonder-kid. Biesla is an admirer of the player and his desire to land the 20 year old made the French side’s management start negotiations with the Spanish club. The deal was almost set to be underway but Arsenal’s newfound interest in the player means a setback for Biesla.

AS suggested that Liverpool were close to getting the player in the winter. In fact, the Merseyside club were hopeful of agreeing a deal on the deadline day for around £8 million. But Atletico manager Diego Simeone did not want to sell a prized asset of the club without a buy-back clause in the deal and the Reds did not want the clause to be inserted.

Manquillo started his youth career in hometown rivals Real Madrid’s ranks alongside his brother. But when Real released his brother, he followed behind and the two joined Atletico Madrid. Manquillo is considered one of the most promising right-backs in La Liga and is currently a regular for Spain’s Under-21 side, having already won the Under-19 European Championship in 2012. He has made 17 appearances for Atletico in the top-fligh. Solid in defence and always consistent, Manquillo is the perfect epitome of a modern full back as he is regularly moving up and down the flanks and trying to create offensive thread along with being assured defensively.

Wenger is desperately looking for a right-back to replace Bacary Sagna following his departure to Manchester City. He is close to landing Newcastle United’s Matheiu Debuchy with the Frenchman reportedly already clearing his medical. But it seems that Arsene Wenger is keen on further strengthening the position and also wants a good cover in place. He has been linked with a number of full backs and if reports are to believed, he has identified the promising 20 year old as the player he wants to bring in to add quality to the depth.
