There seems to be no end in sight for Alan Pardew’s problems at Newcastle as holding midfielder Cheick Tiote confirms he wants to leave the club during the January transfer window. Tiote has been at the club for four years now and was linked with a move to Arsenal in the summer.
The 28-year midfielder has a contract which expires only in June 2017 and hence, Newcastle’s owner might not sell the midfielder unless an agreeable amount is being offered. However there is no point in holding down an obviously unsettled player in the team to ruin the morale. Tiote’s very open declaration of his desire to leave has added to Pardew’s woes as the manager is struggling to hold on to his job.
Tiote was straightforward in expressing his feelings to reporters in the Ivory Coast.
“I want to leave,” he said. “I’ve spent four years with Newcastle and I think I’ve reached the stage where it’s maybe time to look elsewhere for a new challenge.
“I will focus on the upcoming games and see what happens between now and December but it is true there was contact for me in the summer from Arsenal and also from a club in Russia. I would prefer to stay in England, though.”
Tiote was linked with a move away from Newcastle in the summer transfer window with Arsenal and Lokomotiv tried to sign the midfielder. Pardew confirmed that Tiote had become unsettled. “There was a period of unsettlement for Cheik,” said Newcastle’s manager, but eventually Pardew managed to convince the Ivorian to stay and identified him as a key player for the Magpies. Newcastle United are yet to see their first win this season and are struggling to get out of the bottom three. Pardew is on the verge of losing his job and the news of Tiote wanting to leave has come as a big blow for the Newcastle fans.
Pardew wants the midfielder to stay and has urged Ashley to extend his contract beyond 2017 but having bought the player for only a £3.5 million by Chris Hughton from FC Twente, Ashley will be keen to cash in on the 28-year old.
This comes as great news for Arsenal as Wenger is struggling with player injuries and will definitely want to strengthen the squad in the January transfer window. With Ramsey, Wilshere and Diaby always struggling with injuries, Tiote’s addition will be a great boost for Arsenal.
