Manchester United’s defeat at the hands of Stoke City added yet another unwanted record to manager David Moyes’ ever-growing collection.
So far this season, Moyes’ United team has managed to break the following records:
- Lost against West Brom at home for the first time in close to 35 years
United lost their encounter against West Brom 1-2 at Old Trafford on 28th September, 2013. It was their first loss at home to the Baggies in almost 35 years, their last loss being the 3-5 defeat on 30th December, 1978 in the old League Division One. Brian Greenhoff, Sammy McIlroy and Gordan McQueen scored for United that day while Tony Brown (2), Len Cantello, Laurie Cunningham and Cyrille Regis scored for West Brom.
- Lost against Everton at home for the first time in over 21 years
United were defeated 0-1 by Everton at Old Trafford on 4th December, 2013, which was their first loss at home to the Toffees in over 21years, their last loss being the 0-3 defeat on 19th August, 1992 in the Premier League. Peter Beardsley, Robert Warzycha and Mo Johnston scored for Everton in that game.
- Lost against Newcastle at home for the first time in over 41 years
United lost 0-1 in their encounter against Newcastle at Old Trafford on 7th December, 2013, which was their first loss at home to the Magpies in over 41years, their last loss being the 0-2 defeat on 12th February, 1972 in the old League Division One. Stuart Barrowclough and John Tudor were the scorers in that game.
- Lost against Swansea at home for the first time ever
United’s 1-2 FA Cup loss against Swansea on 5th January, 2014 was the first time ever that the Red Devils lost against the Swans at home. Their previous record against the Swans at home was 8 wins and 2 draws, and since then they have won the other match against them, the 2-0 win in the Premier League four days later.
- Lost against Stoke for the first time in the league in almost 30 years
United’s 1-2 Premier League loss at Stoke on 1st February, 2014 was the first time United have lost to Stoke in the league since their 2-1 away loss on 26th December, 1984 in the old League Division One. Since then, United had won 12 and drawn one game in the league before their loss on Saturday.

- Three match losing streak for first time in over 12 years
United started the new year with yet another record they would have wished to avoid, as they tasted defeat in three consecutive games – United lost 1-2 to Tottenham in the league and 1-2 to Swansea in the FA Cup, both at home, and then lost 1-2 yet again at Sunderland in the Capital One Cup. It was the first time United had recorded a hat trick of losses since 2001, when they lost three in a row after having already won the league.
