Atletico Madrid is the top team in Europe at the moment, ahead of Arsenal , Barcelona , Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, as per the latest coefficient scores of UEFA.
Diego Pablo Simoene’s Atletico Madrid is in excellent form this season; both in La Liga and in UEFA Champions League. Their improved performances, perhaps rightfully, are reflected in the latest UEFA coefficient rankings as they sit on the top spot ahead of the likes of Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona.

The season club coefficient rankings are based on the results of clubs competing in this season’s UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. These rankings are also combined with those of the previous four seasons which determine the seeding for each club in all UEFA competition draws.
Clubs’ coefficients are determined by the sum of all points won in the current season, plus 20% of the association coefficient over the same period.
Diego Simeone’s side is currently the only team to have wrapped up first place in its Champions League group. Though Bayern has also won all of its games in the competition till date, Atlético has the overall lead because ‘La Liga’ has a much higher coefficient than the Bundesliga.
Atletico are also having a memorable season in the La Liga as they sit on the second spot – just behind leaders Barcelona and ahead of fellow Madrid rivals Real Madrid.
Considering their recent success in the Europa League and displays in this years’ Chamions League, many experts are labeling them as the dark horses for the UCL title. In the last UCL encounter , having already sealed their place for the next round, Atletico rested many of their key players for the Mathday 5 clash against Zenith St. Petesburgh and still managed to earn a point in testing weather conditions, making a proof of their mental strength which is increasingly becoming their trademark under Diego Simeone.
Atletico Madrid’s fortunes have changed dramatically after the former Argentine player took over the reins at Atletico in December 2012. Since then, Simone has won the UEFA Europa League, the UEFA Super Cup and the Copa-del -Rey with Atletico Madrid – beating the likes of Chelsea and Real Madrid in the finals. Under his leadership Atletico finished third in the 2012-13 season, their highest feat in the league since 1996.
With their current form and trophy laden past few seasons, football pundits regard Atletico as the ‘next big thing’ in the Europe.
