Casillas: On his way towards Manchester City? (Source – Wikimedia, Miguel Lopez)

With Joe Hart increasingly becoming prone to errors, Manchester City are weighing up a bid for Real Madrid icon Iker Casillas. The English club could make a move for the Spain international goalkeeper in the summer transfer window.

Hart, who was nominated for the prestigious PFA player of the award in 2010, is increasingly becoming more and more prone to the errors this season. Despite winning the Golden Glove award for keeping most clean sheets during 2012/13 season, Hart’s displays were not up to the expectations. And in this season also, level of his performances is going downwards. He made horrendous mistake to concede a goal to Fernando Torres in the ninetieth minute as City lost 2-1 to Blues at Stamford Bridge on 1 November. As a result, he was dropped to a bench against Norwich but City management has already started looking for the alternatives to replace the Englishman it seems.

Current situation of Iker Casillas at Madrid has put many potential suitors on the alert as he continues to struggle for the regular game time. Considered to be one of the finest goalkeepers of his generation, injury problems of Casillas started during the first half of last season which prompted the management of Los Blancos to look for the alternatives and Diego Lopez was signed from Sevilla. Earlier seen as the make shift player, excellent displays of Lopez between the bars made him regular starter – first under Jose Mourinho and later under Carlo Ancellotti. Current coach Ancellotti is using club icon only for the UEFA Champions League encounters and Lopez has been used for the La Liga matches. This situation of Spain captain has also induced the national team coach Vicente De Bosque to intervene in this matter as he urged both club and player to resolve it quickly so that this would not hamper his preparations for the World Cup next year.

If this situation continues, Casillas will no doubt look for a new club and of course, there will be no shortage of clubs looking for his signature. But it will also not easy for Real Madrid to sell their iconic captain though as he enjoys massive fans support. City on the other hand, will definitely look to off load Hart if his dismal form continues in the near future. Abu Dhabi sponsored club is also looking for another options other than Casillas as well. Begovic of Stoke City is also on the radar of City management.
