Fiorentina close to landing Julio Cesar as Arsenal abandon talks. While Hoffenheim striker Eren Derdiyok says that he would prefer a move to Hamburg over Serie A strugglers Torino.
Julio Cesar close to joining Fiorentina after Arsenal pull out of the race
Fiorentina are reportedly close to signing QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar after Arsenal pulled out of the race for his signature.
The 33-year-old was relegated with QPR last season after joining the club back in 2012, and despite QPR’s fate, Ceasar was perhaps one of the most consistent performers for the club. The Brazilian international, who has recently participated in the Confederations Cup, has immense experience in European football after spending seven successful season at Inter. During his stint at the Italian club, Cesar established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world, as he won the UEFA Club Goalkeeper Of The Year award during Inter’s historic treble winning season under Jose Mourinho.
Arsenal, Napoli and AS Roma were initially interested in the signing the Brazilian, but all three of them have pulled out of this move. While Napoli have signed Pepe Reina from Liverpool, Roma have signed Morgan De Sanctis from Napoli. Arsenal were in negotiations with Cesar regarding move, who is believed to have preferred to stay back in London, but his high wage demands came across as a stumbling block for the Gunners.
Latest reports suggest that Fiorentina are now leading the chase for his signature as Arsenal have abandoned talks. QPR have accepted the Italian club’s €3 million bid for the goalkeeper and are in the final stages of negotiation with Cesar regarding personal terms. Fiorentina are looking to offer him a one year contract, with an option to extend it, or a two year contract with reduced salary.
Fiorentina might have lost Jovetic this summer, but they have already made some fine acquisition. Julio Cesar is sure to replace Viviano as the number one custodian in the squad, if he completes his move. This will further enhance their chances of challenging the likes of Juventus and Napoli for the Serie A next season.
Eren Derdiyok prefers Hamburg over Torino
Hoffenheim striker Eren Derdiyok says that he would prefer a move to Hamburg over Serie A strugglers Torino.
Derdiyok has had a difficult first season at Hoffenheim following his move from Bayer Leverkusen last summer. The 25-year-old made just six starts in the Bundesliga as he fell down the pecking order behind the likes of Joselu and Kevin Volland. The Swiss international scored only one goal in his debut season and is expected to leave the club this summer.
Hoffenheim struggled in the Bundesliga last season, finishing 16th and barely managed to remain in the top tier after they defeated Kaiserslautern in the relegation play-off. The Sinsheim based club are now looking to rebuild the squad ahead of the upcoming season and Derdiyok is considered to be surplus to requirements as German youngster Sven Schipplock is expected to step up next season.
Hamburg and Italian club Torino are reportedly interested in securing his service, but Derdiyok has now publicly voiced his preference about joining the German club.
“At this moment in time Hamburger SV needs to sell a few players first, I know they want to get rid of some.”
“But I am considering this. Joining Torino is not an option for me, I am not keen on playing in Serie A and Torino is a club that is always in the bottom half of the table.” – Derdiyok was quoted in the BILD.
The above statement is sure to put off Torino and Hamburg are yet to make their move. Derdiyok is unlikely to get regular first team action at Hamburg though. Heung-Min Son and Artjoms Rudnevs are expected to be regulars in the starting line-up, while Derdiyok might be restricted to the role of a sub. But first team action is clearly isn’t his priority at the moment.
