Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a move for Real Betis youngster Alvaro Vadillo, while Chelsea FC are interested in Bayern Munich defensive midfielder Luiz Gustavo
Chelsea lining up a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo
The defensive midfielder was part of the recent triumphant Brazilian squad in the Confederations Cup. A string of good performances in the tournament and over the season at Bayern, has seen him draw interest, initially from Arsenal and now Chelsea.
The 25-year-old has been extremely consistent since joining them from Hoffenheim back in 2011. But last season, after the arrival of Spanish midfielder Javi Martinez, he lost his place in the starting eleven and was mostly restricted to a role on the bench. Next season, with Pep Guardiola at the helm, question marks have been raised about the future of Gustavo at the German club. Bayern have recently bought another midfielder, Thiago Silva, which means Gustavo will now find it hard to break into the first team with any regularity – barring injuries or suspensions. For a footballer of his quality and someone who is approaching the prime of his career, regular first team football is of utmost importance, and the Brazilian might be forced to look elsewhere in search of more game time.
There will be no shortage of suitors for Gustavo, in a day and age where world class defensive midfielders are a rare commodity. Arsenal are reportedly lining up a move for Gustavo, and recent reports suggest that Chelsea have joined the race for his signature. It is believed that the reigning Europa League champions are lining up Gustavo as a direct replacement for Mikel in the squad. The Nigerian international is expected to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, after facing an uncertain future at the club under new manager Jose Mourinho.
Interestingly Chelsea have also been linked with Italian midfielder Daniele De Rossi and are believed to be close in securing a move for him. But it seems unlikely that Jose Mourinho will look to add both De Rossi and Gustavo to the squad. In all likelihood Gustavo seems like a backup option for Chelsea if they fail with a move for De Rossi.
Tottenham Hotspur are chasing Real Betis winger Alvaro Vadillo
The 18-year-old winger has drawn interest from a host of big clubs across Europe, after breaking into the first team last season. Vadillo made his debut for Betis at the age of 16 and became the second youngest player to make his debut in the La Liga. Initially his progress was halted after suffering a serious injury in a match against Real Madrid in 2011, but last season he made a total of 14 appearances for Betis and is now ready to stake a claim as a regular in the starting line-up.
His best performance last season came in the away trip to Granada, where he started on the right side of the front three and assisted the first goal scored by Ruben Castro in a 5-1 hammering. Vadillo’s style of play has often been compared with that of Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo. The Spanish U-20 international is versatile enough to play as a left winger or as a right winger, and is never shy of taking on defenders and dribbling past them. He has tremendous pace, although presently lacks a bit of maturity, which he should gather with age.
Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United and Fiorentina have shown interest in Alvaro Vadillo. United and Fiorentina have already enquired about the youngster back in 2011, according to reports. But the long-term injury he suffered back then has averted any move from potential suitors. Recent reports suggest that Tottenham are now considering a move for the Spaniard and they could possibly land him as cheaply as €3 million.
The London club have been linked with a lot of wingers this summer, something which Andre Villas Boas considers as a priority. Vadillo is an immense prospect for the future and will be a shrewd addition to the squad. It is believed that the youngster has already taken English lessons, while he was recovering from his injury, and hopes to play in the Premier League in the near future.
