Barcelona are said to have sent scouts to watch 27-year-old attacker Jackson Martinez in FC Porto’s clash with Nacional at the weekend.
Martinez, who is also referred as Cha Cha Cha for his dance-like moves on the pitch is an out-and-out goal scorer, He is a front-to-goal centre forward who can finish off with both feet. Martinez started his professional career with Columbian club Independiente Medellin in 2004 where he remained until 2009. He scored 55 goals in 136 appearances before moving to Mexican side Chiapas. He was a key player for Chiapas as he scored impressive 28 goals in just 58 appearances.
Impressive displays of this Colombian star caught the attention of Portuguese giants FC Porto, whose scouting system is highly regarded, and eventually joined them for a transfer fee of around 11 million euros. He took no time in settling in the new surroundings though as he finished his first season with remarkable tally of 34 goals in just 43 matches.
Martinez is also enjoying a strong start to the current season as he has already scored 10 goals for his club FC Porto. His tremendous goal scoring form in Portuguese League also resulted in him being named s the SJPF Player of the Month award for the consecutive months of October and November.
Barcelona was linked with number of strikers during the summer transfer window as well but ended up signing only Neymar from Brazilian club Santos for around 57 million euros. However, with Messi out till year end and ongoing fitness concerns of Christian Tello mean that they will be forced to make a move in the transfer market in January for the striker.
Many recent reports in the European Media have also reported a Barca move for striker – similar to the acquisition of Henrik Larsson. But Barcelona will have to dig deep into their pockets if they want to sign the Colombian star – in the range of 30 million euros as Porto has already rejected a similar move from Napoli in the summer for the in demand striker. Martinez has also been tracked by some EPL sides like Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool.
The likes Miroslav Klose, Dimitar Berbatov, Juan Mata and Kun Aguero have also been linked with Barcelona recently and it would be interesting to see how they approach this transfer window.
