The fact that Mattia Perin has conceded the most number of the goals in Serie A in the current season and yet has managed to draw attention from top European clubs, talks much about Perin’s talent as it does about Pescara’s hapless defence.
The 20-year-old, who is expected to be the one who eventually replaces Buffon in the Italian national team, started his youth career at Genoa. He was loaned out to Pescara back in 2011 and he has managed to grab a permanent place in the Serie A side’s line-up.
His best performance this season came against Fiorentina in January, where he faced a siege on goal and made numerous fantastic saves. At times it seemed like the match was played between Fiorentina and Perin. In the end the young custodian managed to keep a clean sheet as Pescara scored two unlikely goals and grabbed all the three points – Incidentally it was Pescara’s last victory in Serie A till date.
Perin made a meteoric rise through the Italian youth system. It was only in 2009 when Perin went to the U-17 European championship and World Cup as the No.1 goalkeeper, but by 2010 he made his U-21 debut as a 17-year-old. Last year, Cesare Prandelli gave him his first appearance for the senior national team in a friendly against England.
Although recently he has extended his contract, there have been a lot of speculations regarding his future at his parent club Genoa next season and now Matteo Roggi, the agent of Mattia Perin, has revealed that clubs like Arsenal, Barcelona and AC Milan are interested in the 20-year-old. Roggi believes that the Italian international will cost as much as €20 million for any of his suitors, although he pointed out that Perin is likely to remain at Genoa next season.
“There are many clubs interested in him: Arsenal, Barcelona, AC Milan. It has also been said about Juventus, Napoli and Roma.
“Currently, however, there is only one certainty about Mattia’s future: he will return to Genoa at the end of his loan and there is a mutual intention for him to spend at least one season in a Genoa shirt.
“Just a month ago we extended his contract until 2017 and Mattia’s cost is at least €20 million.
“I am 99 per cent sure he will be Genoa’s goalkeeper next season.” – Roggi told the press.
Barcelona are in the market for a new goalkeeper after Victor Valdes announced his desire to leave the club after his contract expires. The Catalan giants have been linked with a number of goalkeepers including Pepe Reina, De Gea and Neuer. Perin will still require some time to fulfil his potential and lacks experience currently, hence it seems unlikely that Barcelona would want him as their first choice keeper.
Arsenal and Arsene Wenger on the other hand don’t have any inhibition in introducing new blood in the starting line-up. The Gunners are also said to be in the market for a new custodian as both Mannone and Szczesny have failed to perform consistently. But it seems at this stage of his career Mattia Perin will hardly provide the consistency Arsenal are looking for. Moreover, with the ever growing pressure of this long barren run of the club, Wenger will look to add experience to the squad. But Perin is one for the future, and if Arsenal sign him, it will raise questions about Szczesny’s and Mannone’s future at the club.
