Arsenal FC have made a ‘cheeky’ second bid for Luis Suarez, which was instantly rejected by Liverpool FC, while Fiorentina have completed the signing of Palermo midfielder Josip Ilicic.
Liverpool reject second bid from Arsenal for Suarez
Liverpool were quick to turn down Arsenal’s second bid of £40m for Luis Suarez, but the Gunners have cunningly activated a clause in the contract of the Uruguayan international.
Arsenal have submitted a club record bid for Luis Suarez to Liverpool last night. According to reports, Ivan Gazidis made a £40,000,001 offer to Ian Ayre for the 26-year-old striker, which was instantly rejected by the Merseyside club. But the extra £1 pound added in the offer means that they have successfully activated the clause in Suarez’s contract, which will allow the London club to hold talks with the Liverpool striker. According to the clause, Liverpool are obliged to consider a bid above £40m [although they will not be forced to accept it] and will have to inform Suarez about the offer, which will open up the door for Arsenal to directly talk to Suarez if the striker is interested in listening to their offer.
This is Arsenal’s second bid for the forward, following their initial bid of £30m plus £5m in add-ons, which was turned down by the Reds. Liverpool were clear that they wouldn’t sell the striker unless the club receives of a bid which matches their valuation of £55m. But despite their refusal to negotiate a lower fee, Arsenal’s ‘cheeky’ second bid has irked the Merseyside club.
“When you consider that Cavani has gone for £55m you know … Luis is up there in that bracket of top talent. Obviously it [Arsenal’s first bid] was an offer we didn’t deem worthy of the talent and even if they came back with that kind of amount [£55m] there’s no guarantee he would be sold even for that because we are trying to build something here.” – Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers was quoted in press few days ago.
It is also believed that Liverpool won’t sell the striker unless they receive a written transfer request from him. Now with Liverpool having to inform Suarez of Arsenal’s offer (according to the clause), it will be interesting to see if the forward pushes for a move. Reports suggest that Suarez is in no hurry to make a decision regarding his future, and that the forward is also waiting to see if Real Madrid does make their move eventually. Suarez has publicly expressed his desire to play for the Spanish club, but Real Madrid are yet to submit an offer despite all the speculation.
Arsenal’s interest in Suarez was initially thought to be a smokescreen and a mean to negotiate with Real Madrid regarding the sale of Gonzalo Higuain. The Argentine international was Arsenal’s priority this summer, but according to latest reports he is close to signing for Napoli after the Gunners failed to match Real Madrid’s increased demands for the striker. Arsenal are now determined to land Suarez and it seems unlikely that their latest offer, which was rejected, will be their last one.
Luis Suarez will be officially informed about Arsenal’s offer after the club’s preseason friendly against Melbourne Victory. Arsenal’s next move might depend on whether Suarez pushes for an exit and hands down a transfer request. Till then though, Liverpool remain in the driving seat in this transfer saga.
Fiorentina complete the signing of Josip Ilicic
The Viola finished fourth last season and missed out on qualification for the Champions League, but this time they are putting together a team, which could potentially challenge Juventus for the title. They might have lost their star player Jovetic to Manchester City, but Fiorentina have already bought strengthened their squad this summer.
Ilicic will become their latest signing after Fiorentina agreed a deal with Palermo for the talented Slovenian midfielder. Illicic has been a key figure for Palermo in the last three seasons after joining them from Maribor back in 2010. Last season was personally his best ever for the Rosanero as he scored 10 goals in the league, although it wasn’t enough to save them from relegation. His future was up for speculations this summer as the attacking midfielder was linked with AC Milan, Liverpool and Arsenal among a host of European clubs. But his agent has earlier stated that Ilicic will prefer a move to an Italian club.
“Fiorentina and Palermo announce they have reached an agreement for the permanent transfer of Josip Ilicic. The agreement is subject to the player signing his contract.” – Read a statement on the official website of Fiorentina.
Fiorentina co-owner Andrea Della Valle has however insisted that the club will continue to spend as they look to ‘reinforce the midfield’.
“Ilicic will arrive and the surprises aren’t over yet. We will reinforce the midfield and make this team even stronger.” – Andrea Della Valle told the press.
The Italian club have already completed the signing of Mario Gomez, Joaquin, Marcos Alonso and Massimo Ambrosini this summer. It seems like Vincenzo Montella will have a string enough squad to host a title challenge and possibly finish in the top-three next season – exciting times ahead for the Viola fans.
