Chelsea FC are considering a move Samuel Eto’o, where as Manchester City are keen on Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Paolo Cannavaro as they look to strengthen their faltering defense.
Chelsea eyeing a move for Samuel Eto’o
Chelsea are contemplating a move for Samuel Eto’o after failing with two bids for Wayne Rooney.
Jose Mourinho has publicly stated his desire about Wayne Rooney and how the England international is their only remaining transfer target this summer. But having failed with two bids for the Manchester United striker, Chelsea have now earmarked Samuel Eto’o as their back up option in case their third and final bid for Rooney is rejected as well.
The Cameroonian striker is one of the most prolific strikers to have played this game in the last decade and even at 32, he surely has a lot of contribute. Anzhi are currently a club in financial turmoil. Their owner has put up most of the star players for sale, including the former Barcelona striker. Chelsea or other interested clubs could land him for cheap, for a fee as low as £5m. Incidentally, Napoli have also been linked with Eto’o and although his agent has revealed that the Italian club are yet to contact them.
‘It’d be a dream for him to wear the jersey of a glorious club like Napoli. However, so far they have not contacted us.’ – Eto’o agent was quoted in press.
But it is Chelsea which is Eto’o preferred destination, mostly due to their new manager Jose Mourinho. Eto’o has won two Champions League title in his career and the last of the duo came under Jose Mourinho at Inter. The striker has a fantastic relation with the Chelsea manager and would like to work under him once again.
‘There is only one Jose Mourinho. I have played under a lot of great coaches – but there is no other character in the game like Jose.
‘He is one of the best coaches in the world – and we had a lot of success together at Inter Milan. I would like to have the chance to play under him again – because it is never boring when Jose is around.
‘Of course Chelsea are a great team – and when we have all the offers on the table then I will discuss with my agent and see what my next step is.’ – The Chelsea target told the press.
Chelsea are in need of an experienced striker upfront, considering the inconsistency of Torres and inexperience of Lukaku, in order to challenge for the title. Eto’o will be a fantastic addition, specially for the quoted price, as there are few strikers in the world who is more lethal in front of goal on his day. Although his age might be a cause for concern, but Mourinho might still be able to get the best out of him for two more seasons.
Manchester City looking to strengthen defense – Papadopoulos and Cannavaro in the shortlist
Manchester City are keen on signing a new defender; Schalke youngster Papadopoulos and Napoli center back Cannavaro are the possible options.
Manchester City have had a very active summer this time around, having already secured the big name signings of Fernandinho, Negredo and Navas. But manager Manuel Pellegrini is now keen on strengthening his defense having seen his team leaking goals in the preseason friendly.
City have conceded 8 goals in their last three matches against Arsenal, Bayern Munich and AC Milan. Expect for their matches against South China and Sunderland, the English club have failed to keep a clean sheet in all of their preseason matches this summer – which started with conceding six goals against Chelsea in their US tour.
In their last match against Arsenal, the frailties at the back were exposed once again as City despite dominating possession conceded three goals from three counter-attacks. Club captain Vincent Kompany’s form has also provided a cause for concern for Pellegrini. The Belgium international, who was pivot in City’s Premier League winning campaign, has been inconsistent last season and has shown no signs of improvement in form this summer as well. Nastasic is an excellent talent, but is too inexperienced at the moment, whereas Lescott is entering the wrong side of 30. They have also lost Kolo Toure this summer, which means the first team squad has only three recognized center backs as of now.
Manchester City are now back in the market for a new defender and Pellegrini looks to plug the hole at the back. Two names have made it to the shortlist of possible targets – Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Paolo Cannavaro. Papadopoulos has been linked with Liverpool all summer, but both the clubs have failed to reach an agreement as the Mersey side club was unwilling to meet Schalke’s high demands. But those demands shouldn’t be a stumbling block for City in case they make a move for him. The Greece international is highly rated and is considered to be one of the best young defenders in Europe at the moment.
Paolo Cannavaro on the other hand will be a much cheaper option and will mostly be a stop gap recruit rather than someone for the future. But the 32-year-old has tremendous experience behind him having made over 375 appearances in the Serie A and European games in his career so far. He has been a mainstay on the Napoli defense since joining them from Parma back in 2006 and could provide to be a decent signing for the Manchester club, although there will be questions about how well he can adapt to the pace of the Premier League at this age.
