Tottenham Hotspur are currently in talks with Sevilla’s president Jose Maria Del Nedo regarding the sale of Spanish striker Alvaro Negredo.

Tottenham HotspurSpanish club Sevilla are currently in deep financial trouble. This is the first time that Sevilla have announced a loss under the reign of current president Jose Maria Del Nedo. The club is believed to have a debt of €49m and are trying to sell some of their prized assets in order to balance their book.

Alvaro Negredo is one of the players that has been reportedly put for sale by the Spanish club. The 27-year-old, who won the 2012 European championship with Spain, has made 112 appearances for Sevilla since joining them back in 2009 from Almeria.

Negredo has scored eight goals this season and his strike against Espanyol could possibly be his last for the club. In fact, with the club in financial trouble, the future of Ivan Rakitic and Jesus Navas are also in doubts.

According to reports, Sevilla president Jose Maria Del Nedo has flown to London in order to initiate talks with Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy. It is believed that the Spanish club is looking for a transfer fee of €18million for Negredo, while Spurs are believed to be offering €12million.

Meanwhile Negredo’s agent has also offered the striker to Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle United. While Liverpool can be ruled out due to the recent acquisition of Daniel Sturridge, Arsenal and Newcastle are in the market for a new striker. In fact Negredo was initially linked with Chelsea, before the London club brought Demba Ba.

Tottenham Hotspur are certainly the favourites to land the former Real Madrid striker, as they seemed to have conceded defeat in their chase for Brazilian striker Leandro Damiao, their primary target this winter. Manager Andre Villas-Boas has recently stated that Damiao is unlikely to join Spurs.

“Leandro is a player we’ve always appreciated, that this club appreciated before I arrived, but it’s extremely difficult that he’s going to join Tottenham.

“He’s a player that is highly rated in the market, and it’s unlikely that he will play for Tottenham.” – AVB was quoted in the press.

Spurs are in need of a striker as Adebayor has left for the African Cup Of Nations. With only Defoe upfront, Tottenham Hotspur need to add numbers to the striking department. Negredo is a suitable striker to play in the lone role upfront in AVB’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation. His physical strength means he can play with his back facing the goal and his goal scoring record over the past three seasons (52 goals in his last 88 appearances for the club) means he is a seasoned finisher.

But it would be interesting to see if Arsenal and Newcastle United show interest in the striker and initiate a bidding war. Sevilla would desperately want a bidding war!
