Shillong Lajong – the face of I-League in North-East have signed FIFA World Cupper Cornell Glen and Cameroon International Charles Edoa Nga as the influx of foreign players in Indian Football continues.
Shillong Lajong had an unimpressive last season as they found themselves fighting relegation for most of the season and a major reason was the inability of the strikers to convert chances created by the midfielders. The team managed to score only 26 goals in as many matches which was the third lowest and a major percentage of those came in the second half of the season when the likes of Edinho Junior and Sho Kamimura joined the side. Shillong Lajong however have taken a giant step to solve their goal-scoring woes and have signed FIFA World Cupper and Trinidad & Tobago international Cornell Glen along with Charles Edoa Nga from Cameroon. The North-Eastern powerhouses have also signed highly rated Indian striker Subhash Singh.
Cornell Glen Becomes First MLS Player To Play In I-League
“We are pleased with the signing of an experienced player like Cornell Glen I hope that Glen will gel well with the rest of the team and we look forward to him joining us and help the team put up a competitive performance in the upcoming I League ”. – Larsing Ming, after signing Cornell Glen
Trinidad & Tobago international Cornell Glen was Lajong’s first foreign player signing this season and the 31 year old striker has arrived from Trinidad & Tobago club North East Stars. Glen has played 66 matches for his country scoring 23 times and his high-point remains his performance in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. It was the Caribbean nation’s first world cup appearance and though the team failed to win a match, Glen preformed admirably with his goal-bound shot against Sweden deserving a special mention.
At club level, Glen has largely played in Trinidad & Tobago and the Major League Soccer in USA. Glen began his professional career with Trinidadian club FUTGOF before moving to play in the lower divisions of Portugal. In 2002 he returned back and joined San Juan Jabloteh and it was here that his career took off. Glen led Jabloteh to two back-to-back league titles and scored a hat-trick in CONCACAF Champions Cup against Chicago Fire , a performance that took him to Major League Soccer in USA where he played with a host of clubs, most notably Los Angeles Galaxy where he scored a brace on his debut with Landon Donovan assisting both the goals. Glen also had a trial with Leeds United in 2008 but the deal couldn’t materialize.
Glen’s experience of playing in the World Cup – the highest level of competition in football will surely rub onto the young Lajong team who have on a lot of occasions lacked a leader to motivate and guide them. The club and it’s fans will look to him to end their goal scoring woes and with his international experience , it should not be tough for Glen to get among the goals once he settles down. He will get support upfront form Subhash Singh and from the midfield from the likes of Milan Singh, Jibon Singh and the Japanese midfielder Taisuke Matsugae.
“Shillong Lajong FC has always been one of the well known Clubs from that part of the World (India) and to get an opportunity to play for them would be such an honour and something that would give me immense pride, more so if I could help the Club do well in the League” – Glen after signing for Shillong Lajong
Junior Cameroon International Charles Edoa Nga Joins Lajong
” Charles is a great signing for us.He is a player with good experience at club and international level with Cameroon, in spite of his young age, and we believe he will add significant quality to our squad this coming season“. – Larsing Ming on Charles
23 year old Cameroon striker Charles Edoa Nga became the second and the last foreign player signing for Shillong Lajong. The 23 year old played for his nation at both the U-17 and U-20 team and was part of the second string Cameroon team that played in the Nehru Cup. In fact, he has been a regular member of the Cameroon B team and is knocking on the doors of the senior team. At club level Charles has been playing for Union Douala, in top flight of Cameroon League and has been among the goals since his debut. He has also played for his club in 2009 CAF Confederations Cup. The young striker was the top scorer for his club in the 2011 season and has been dishing out impressive performances on a consistent basis.
Charles is one of the most promising young players in Cameroon at the moment and wanted to try out his luck in Europe but visa problems forced him to come to Indian shores. Charles can operate as a striker and also as winger on either of the flanks and his physicality and direct style of play will be a welcome addition to Lajong who like to play a short passing game. Charles’ blistering pace and imposing strength will be a great asset for the North-Eastern powerhouses and will no doubt make it tough for opposition defenders to mark him.
“I am very happy and looking forward to joining Shillong Lajong FC,which I think,in my opinion,is one of the few Clubs who have a really huge fan base in India. So my main focus is to go there, play well for the team, and bring joy to the fans, because I know how much they love their Club and their football.” – Charles expressing his pleasure after signing for Lajong
Having already retained defender Minchol Son and midfielder Taisuke Matsugae , Shillong Lajong have completed their quota of foreign players and have no doubt made quality signings. Their fans will be hoping that Glen and Charles settle down soon.
