Reports in Italy indicate that champions Juventus have signed Nicolas Anelka on a five month deal from Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua, with an option to extend the deal for a further year at the end of the season. The former French International is expected to undergo a medical at the Old Lady on Sunday.
If completed, this will be Juventus’ second major signing of the January Transfer window, after a deal was agreed to sign Fernando Llorente from Athletic Bilbao. Anelka is largely being viewed as a short term fix to Juventus’ striking options until the Spaniard joins next season.
It was an emergency situation and we needed some extra firepower up front. We have tied Anelka to a five-month deal. He can be a good short-term solution for us and at the end of the season we will evaluate the situation. – Juventus CEO Giuseppe Marotta
Anelka failed to get settled at Shanghai Shenhua and there were several reports of unpaid wages and heated exchanges with fans among others. Even the presence of former teammate Didier Drogba, who was another transfer target for Juventus in this window, alongside him failed to ensure continuity in the Chinese League. If he completes the move, it will be the 10th club that Nicolas Anelka plays for. Among others, the former France international has played for Real Madrid, Arsenal and Chelsea through the course of his career.
