Cashing in money and sponsorships with a long standing tradition of success
High profile football stars, a top-notch league record, and a tradition of winning—all these factors contribute to a football club’s success. And more often than not, this success translates to popularity as seen in Real Madrid.
“Real Madrid remains the most popular club in Spain, despite taking a backseat to arch-rivals, Barcelona in terms of title wins over the past several years,” a report by Inside Spanish Football said. The study was taken from the Association of Research for Media Companies (AIMC).
Real Madrid’s popularity isn’t just a result of high-profile players joining the club. Apparently, their famed status as a team is their ace in attracting multiple sponsors. The club has long been home to corporate companies and their sponsorship. Bwin.com, an entertainment giant known to operate gaming portal partypoker, was a staunch supporter of Real Madrid, and in fact has been their kit sponsor from 2007 until July 2013.
“The long-term shirt sponsorship of Real Madrid has been fundamental in establishing bwin as Europe’s leading online gaming brand and has been one of the most successful partnerships in football, helping Real Madrid to deliver two La Liga titles, two Spanish Super Cups and the Copa del Rey,” an article posted on Real Madrid said.
Today, the club’s football kits are sponsored by Fly Emirates, an Arabic flying company. This change of sponsorship is considered as the most expensive in club history. And is a huge factor in contributing to the team’s popularity.
A report by Finance News 24 said that “the amount of money around this sponsorship deal makes it the most expensive one ever in the club’s history and will bring in a few more advantages that aren’t easily measurable at a first glance. Clubs like Real Madrid have a vital need to open themselves to markets world-wide and convert that exposure into merchandising and TV deals revenues. This 4-year agreement with Fly Emirates will surely ease that mission, at least in what concerns several countries of the Middle East, with the wealthy United Arab Emirates and Qatar in the frontline.”
Apart from football kits, Real Madrid players will also receive clothing sponsorship from Versace for official occasions attended by the club, according to reports from the Telegraph. Their popularity has also been utilized by car companies. Aside from poker operators, airline companies, and Real Madrid players are also receiving Audi cars as their official cars for the season. According to a report by the club’s website, this gesture with Audi marks both entities’ tenth anniversary of partnership.
