The 19-year-old made a name of for himself last season, after breaking into the Roma first team and putting up some fantastic displays at the back. The Brazilian U-23 international was signed by Roma back in 2012 from Corinthians and Marquinhos has made tremendous progress since his arrival.
The Giallorossi have recently signed the Morocco International, Mehdi Benatia, for a reported €13.5 million fee from fellow Serie A outfit Udinese, on a five-year contract. It is believed that Benatia is a direct replacement for Marquinhos, who is destined to leave Rome this summer. Manchester United, Barcelona and PSG were interested in the youngster, his agent has confirmed few days back. In fact according to reports Roma have earlier rejected a €20 million bid from Barcelona for the defender, but PSG have once again flexed their muscle and blown out competition with a €35 million bid.
Marquinhos’ brother has now confirmed that an agreement has been reached between both the clubs and what remains is the formal announcement of the deal.
“We were awake all night trying to reach an agreement. But finally we succeeded.” Luan Aoas told Lancenet.
Although Marquinhos is undoubtedly one of the most talented young defender in Europe presently, €35 million for a 19-year-old is paying over the top to say the least. The Brazilian will be looking to pair-up with Thiago Silva in the defence, although his future has been up for speculation this summer. It will be interesting to see if Marquinhos’ arrival paves way for the departure of Thiago Silva to Barcelona. PSG can now boast of having two brilliant young center-backs in Mamdou Sakho and Marquinhos, certainly ones to look out for the future.
For Roma, this is a brilliant deal as for a player whom they bought for nearly 1/10th of this price. They already have bought in Mehdi Benatia as a replacement, along with the arrival of another extremely talented youngster in Tin Jedvaj.
