Manchester United v Real Sociedad –
Final Score/Result: Man United 1-0 Real Sociedad
Man Of The Match: Wayne Rooney
Manchester United maintained the unbeaten start to their European campaign with a comfortable win against Real Sociedad at Old Trafford.
Manchester United have made a slow start to their league campaign, but their performances in Champions League has been fairly good. They maintained their good start with another comfortable victory against Real Sociedad last night. It was one of their best performances in recent times, although the score line didn’t exactly reflect that.
Manchester United started the match on the front foot and took an early. Wayne Rooney took possession of the ball and cut back inside from the left. The Englishman made space for himself and hit the post with a wonderful shot. But the rebound went in off Real Sociedad defender Inigo Martinez. It turned out to be an own goal in the end, but it was all down to Wayne Rooney’s ability.
The home side dominated the match after that and Real Sociedad failed to create too many opening. In fact the Spanish side managed only one shot on target in the whole game. Shinji Kagawa, Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs shined for Manchester United. The only drawback of this performance was perhaps the fact that United failed to score more than one goal.
David Moyes was delighted with the performance and the result, although he bemoaned the fact that his side failed to score more goals. He also praised Wayne Rooney after his brilliant performance in this game.
“It was job done tonight. We had to win the game and we did so, and it was a good performance. We could, and should, have scored more, but it was a good victory. We had [a similar situation] on Saturday where we led 1-0 going into the last stages so there was a bit of nervousness around that tonight, but if we had scored five or six today, it wouldn’t have been out of place.
“Wayne Rooney was absolutely terrific. I was shouting at him in the last five minutes, though! We just want a top player like Wayne to play well. I said from day one that his training was great. I think England have seen that. But we need to see it all the time. I thought we had some great performances throughout the team tonight.” – The Manchester United manager told the press.
Real Sociedad manager Jagoba Arrasate was disappointed with the loss and has admitted that his side’s chance of qualification is virtually over after losing their opening three matches.
“We conceded a goal in the second minute and it is very difficult to turn the score around from there. We wanted to but we could not. United were better and their victory is a fair result. The boys are sad because they were very excited [about this competition], but now we have to recover and continue fighting. We have the chance to be third [in Group A], but now we must focus on the Liga. When you concede a goal so early it is difficult – the team were not good in the first half-hour. We let them run and we suffered a lot.” – Jagoba Arrasate said.
