Manchester United have turned their attention towards Borussia Dortmund midfielder İlkay Gündoğan.
The German international has been in fantastic form this season and has been one of the pivotal figures in Dortmund’s success in Europe this time around. The 22-year-old, who was born to parents of Turkish decent, has grabbed the attention of a lot of big clubs across Europe and recent rumours suggest that Manchester United are ready to make their move for the dynamic midfielder, in the summer.
Gundogan made an instant impact in the team, since joining them from Nuremberg back in 2011, as Nuri Sahin left the club for Real Madrid. He has already made forty appearances this season for both club and country and will be crucial to Dortmund’s hope of beating Bayern Munich in the final of the Champions League and lifting the coveted trophy.
In a recent interview Gundogan has revealed that he wants to play in England or Spain in the future, although he hasn’t disclosed anything about his immediate plans for next season.
“It is not reprehensible to answer such questions (of a future career in England or Spain) with ‘yes’.
“Everyone has a childhood dream on what he would like to achieve one day and my dream always was to play in England or Spain.” – The Manchester United target was quoted in press.
Sir Alex is expected to sign at least one central midfielder in the summer. Michael Carrick has been the only constant in United’s midfield this season and the English man will require more support if United are to continue their dominance in the league and improve on their performances in Europe this season. Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs are at the fag end of their footballing career, while Anderson is expected to leave the club next season.
Gundogan would be a huge coup for United, but they are likely to face tough competition from other European clubs as well, including Manchester City. The midfielder’s market price is believed to be around £17m, although even if Dortmund agrees to sale, the price is expected to rise substantially.
But the most important factor is that Dortmund are highly unlikely to sell Gundogan any time soon. Jurgen Klopp will lose two of his most important players next season with Gotze signing for Bayern Munich, while Lewandowski is set to depart as well. So losing Gundogan could effectively end any of their remaining chances of competing with Bayern in the Bundesliga.
