Manchester United have reportedly enquired about FC Barcelona midfielder and former Arsenal FC captain Cesc Fabregas in a shock move.

Manchester United Transfer News - Former Arsenal Captain Cesc Fabregas On The RadarThe 26-year-old midfielder has made 38 appearances in all competitions for the Catalan side – has scored 13 goals and provided 11 assists – and still it feels as if he hasn’t settled down in the squad as of yet. The Spaniard has been used in various positions across the field – from the role of false nine to a central midfielder. But he has never enjoyed the freedom or has matched the level of the performances he showed for Arsenal.

A few days back, rumours suggested that there is a possibility of Fabregas returning to Arsenal this season, but latest reports suggest that Manchester United, all of a sudden, have made an enquiry for the Spanish international.

The Manchester club will undergo a transitional period next season, with Sir Alex Ferguson retiring from his role and Everton manager David Moyes looking to fill his boots. It is believed that United are trying to make a statement with a big marquee signing in this summer and they are looking for Fabregas to add to their midfield, which has looked thin at times – especially considering the fact that Paul Scholes will retire, Ryan Giggs is also approaching the fag end of his career, there are fitness concerns about Fletcher and the future of Anderson is up for speculation. Carrick is the only permanent fixture in the United midfield and Fabregas will add more teeth to an already fantastic United attack.

But where and how Fabregas will fit into the United system is for anyone to guess, especially when you consider Kagawa can excel in that role of an attacking midfielder and even Rooney, if he stays, will provide competition for that spot in the starting eleven.

Although we live in a strange and unpredictable world, the chances of this move materializing in the near future are very less. Firstly, Barcelona are highly unlikely to sell Fabregas, as he is still considered to be a big part of their future plans. Secondly, the Spaniard, who still loves Arsenal, is likely to re-sign with the Gunners if he does decide to return to the Premier League once again. Third and most crucial point to note is the fact that Arsenal do have a right to first refusal clause in Fabregas’ contract, so if Barca do agree to sell him, Arsene Wenger is most likely to grab the opportunity with both his hands. The London club are also eligible for a big percentage of the transfer fee that Fabregas’ next transfer move will generate for Barcelona, so it is only logical, financially, for the Spanish club to sell him to the Gunners. But stranger things have happened in football, so United fans may have a reason to get excited with this news.
