Man Of The Match: Javier Hernandez
Manchester United advanced to the quarter finals of the Capital One Cup with a resounding 4-0 win over Norwich City.
Manchester United thrashed fellow Premier League side Norwich City 4-0 in the Capital One Cup today. The Red Devils qualified for the quarter finals of the competition with a convincing victory over the Canaries thanks to a brace from United’s Mexican forward Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez.
United manager David Moyes made several changes to the side that beat Stoke City 3-2 at the weekend, with Javier Hernandez given a starting berth following his match winner against Stoke, in place of Robin van Persie. Wayne Rooney started on the bench as United starlet Adnan Januzaj played in the No. 10 role behind Hernandez. There were also starts for Wilfried Zaha and Ashley Young. Experienced centre back pairing of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand also returns to the starting eleven.
Norwich themselves made sweeping changes, with Leroy, Fer, Snodgrass and Bassong the only four players remaining from their weekend draw with Cardiff at the weekend in the Premier League. Swedish striker Johan Elamander started as the lone striker with Wes Hoolahan and Nathan Redmond supporting him.
The first clear attack was by Norwich with Nathan Redmond dragging his shot wide off the mark in the 9th minute. It took the 19th minute to finally see a goal in this fixture as United were given a penalty when Januzaj was hacked down by Fer inside the box. Hernandez coolly stepped up and dispatched the penalty to give United a 20th minute lead. It was Januzaj’s turn to take a shot at goal in the 36th minute as he curled a shot just wide of the top corner. The Belgian came close again in the 45th minute when his rasping drive stung goalkeeper Bunn’s hands and Bassong followed up to prevent Januzaj from scoring off the rebound.
Both teams went into the tunnel at half time with United leading 1-0 thanks to a Robin van Persie goal. After the break Norwich started the game off brightly, as Johan Elmander flicked a cross from Nathan Redmond over the crossbar. And in the 52nd minute, United scored their and Javier Hernandez’s second goal as left back Alexander Buttner’scross was headed to goal by Hernandez. Although his initial shot was saved, Hernandez followed up to head in the rebound.
Norwich almost hit back at once with the impressive Redmond setting up Snodgrass whose header was directed straight at Anders Lindegaard. United themselves came close in the 70th minute as Januzaj skipped past Fer and curled his shot just past the post.
Redmond injured himself in the 75th minute and Josh Murphy came on to replace him. In the 78th minute, Zaha was replaced by Wayne Rooney, who had a couple of shots at goal but couldn’t score. Januzaj was shifted to right wing to accommodate Rooney in his position just behind the striker. Rooney took a couple of decent shots at goal but couldn’t add to the goals scored.
United finished strong with two goals in the space of three minutes as defenders Phil Jones and Fabio scored against the Canaries. Fabio, who came on for Januzaj, was found by Rooney with a perfectly chipped pass. Fabio controlled the ball and finished it well to finish off Norwich for the night.
Steve Round felt that United were lucky to get the penalty in the first half, although he insisted that in the end it didn’t have an huge impact on the outcome of the match.
“I didn’t look like a penalty to me, it looked like he slipped over, and it was very harsh on Norwich.
“In the end I suppose it didn’t really matter because the other goals made it comprehensive.
“He (Hernandez) is an infectious player. He loves to score, we see it every day in training when he buzzes around the place.
“He had a good chance at the death with a header to make it three and get his hat-trick, but I’m sure he’ll take two and move onto the next game.” – Manchester United assistant manager said.
Round also emphasized on the fact that his side needs to get on a winning run in all competition.
“This club is used to winning, it has a winning mentality. There were no great celebrations after the win on Saturday and none tonight.
“We just move on to Fulham, that is how it is. You need to go on runs in this league and this club is the best in the business at building that.” – He added.
