Manchester United manager David Moyes has revealed that Robin van Persie will be out of action for a month with a thigh injury.
Manchester United faced a big blow ahead of their visit to Villa Park on Sunday. Robin van Persie will be out of action for a month with a thigh injury, David Moyes announced in the pre-match press conference. The Dutch international was substituted in the midweek clash against Shakhtar Donetsk and will now be unavailable for during this important period for the Red Devils as they look to climb their way back up the table.
The former Arsenal striker was a prime contributor during their title winning campaign in 2012-13 and has already scored seven goals in 10 starts this season. The 30-year-old, who has had a history of fitness concerns during his tenure at the London club, has already suffered from a toe and groin injury last month. He returned to action against Newcastle United after missing four games and is has now once again been side-lined due to another injury.
This injury comes at an important part of United’s season who have struggled for goals in their last three games. While the presence of Wayne Rooney might cover up his absence, van Persie has been an inspiration figure in the side since his arrival and that would certainly be missed on the pitch. Moreover, the reigning Premier League champions has a wonderful record when both Rooney and Robin van Persie have started for them and David Moyes pointed this out during his pre-match press conference.
“It is unfortunate, because if you look at our record with Wayne and Robin in the team it is very good and we have not had them for a period.” – The Manchester United manager told the press.
Man United are still without Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher and there are concerns about the fitness of Marouane Fellaini, Patrice Evra, Chris Smalling and Nemanja Vidic. The French left-back is however expected to be feature in this match and will be the only change in the back-line Moyes fielded against Shakhtar. Nani will make his way back into the side in place of Young, while Cleverley replaces Ryan Giggs at the center of the park.
Expected starting line-up for Manchester United (4-2-3-1): De Gea (GK); Rafael, Ferdinand, Evans, Evra; Cleverley, Jones; Januzaj, Kagawa, Nani; Rooney
