Manchester United boss David Moyes has put Porto’s talented Frenchman Eliaquim Mangala on his transfer wish-list. Several British news agencies including Mirror, Eurosport have confirmed the news today.
Moyes was in the stadium to watch powerful centre-back in action on Wednesday as the Portuguese giants got out of the Champions League against Atletico Madrid – and is in the search for this £15 million rated youngster.
Scouts from Manchester United have been watching Mangala for past few months, as Moyes looks for a new reliable player at the back with Nemanja Vidic, 32, showing signs of wear and his central defensive partner Rio Ferdinand, 35, also nearing the end of his career.
Physique and marking ability of the Frenchman make him ideal for the Premier League – and reportedly Moyes wanted to see how he handles the enraged attack of Atletico Madrid.
The Scot is expected to spend big in January and has been linked with numerous prospects including this Porto star – although one hitch with Mangala is that he is cup-tied for the Champions League.
Mangala, 22, has impressed the Les Blues coach with his stellar performances over past one year and almost sure of getting selected into the World Cup squad. The French national who also holds the citizenship of Belgium, standard his professional career with Standard Liege at the age of 17 and had 4 year long successful career. He moved to FC Porto in 2011 for reported fee of around 6.5 million euros and now established himself as the regular starter.
Recently, Chris Smalling has struggled at centre-back and Phil Jones rarely gets a chance in the position he is tipped to fill permanently in time, so United do need a big, strong figure at the back.
Mangala has also been tracked by several other leading sides, including Chelsea – but their boss Jose Mourinho has preference towards St. Etienne defender Kurt Zouma as a new recruit.
United step up pursuit of Inter Milan midfielder Fredy Guarin:
Several reports in English media have claimed that Manchester United are said to be preparing a move for Inter Milan midfielder Fredy Guarin. The Colombian is reportedly valued at around 22 million Euros by the Serie A club, and David Moyes has identified the 27-year-old as a player who can add some much-needed quality to their midfield.
Moyes is desperately hunting for a quality midfielder to his squad in the New Year after watching his side slip to ninth in the Premier League -13 points adrift of leaders Arsenal. Guarin’s versatility would ease some of the burden on a United midfield that has struggled at times this season, and the former Porto man would be eligible to play in the Champions League if he were to move to Old Trafford next month. United are also linked with a move for Atletico star Koke off late.
