Manchester United are desperate to sign a midfielder and Barcelona are ready to listen to offers for former Arsenal midfielder Alex Song as the Catalans are ready to accept meager £8.3m for the Cameroon international according to the English sports site Sports Direct News
The 26 year old Cameroonian has failed to make an impact at the Nou Camp since his move to La Liga from Arsenal in August 2012 with the defensive midfielder starting five of Barcelona’s 15 La Liga fixtures this season.
Man United are in the market for tough tackler and the chance to get such an experienced campaigner for this low price could be too alluring to neglect as David Moyes and his scouts are desperate to freshen up Old Trafford squad and especially midfield in January.
Prior to his move to Barcelona, Song had spent seven seasons at the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal secured his services on loan for the 2005-06 season on 11 August 2005. Arsenal agreed to a £1 million fee. Originally a utility player on the fringes of the first team, Song quickly became an integral part of Arsenal’s starting eleven during the preseason to the 2008–09 campaign.
The then 21-year-old established himself as a key member of Arsène Wenger’s squad, making 48 appearances in all competitions. He enjoyed his most productive and eye-catching campaign yet as he emerged as a genuine midfield enforcer – the perfect foil for Cesc Fàbregas in the Arsenal engine room.
On 20 August 2012, Song signed a five-year contract with FC Barcelona for a fee of £15m. He made his Barcelona debut in El Classico against Real Madrid in the 2012 Super Copa De Espana on 29 August 2012 as a substitute for the last 15 minutes, finishing the match with a perfect passing statistic. Since then however, he has been unable to get into the starting XI of the Blaugrana side which has abundance of talent in the midfield.
He has made only 26 appearances since his debut and reportedly looking for regular football. Chance of returning to the league where he has given his best performances would no doubt look very attractive to Song
Man United’s struggles in the centre of the park are well known as they lack an out and out defensive midfielder and Song could help provide some much needed steel to the most concerning area of the club’s line-up.
Barcelona are thought to be looking to sell Song to make room for a possible addition of their own with Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan and Inter Milan’s Fredy Guarin both being on Gerardo Martino’s radar.
Manchester United however, not the only club interested in him as Italian side Napoli managed by Rafa Banitez are also said to be interested in Song.
