Liverpool FC are willing to endure loss in order to offload Stuart Downing to Newcastle United, while Napoli are back, this time for Martin Skrtel.
Liverpool prepared to sell Stuart Downing to Newcastle United
Newcastle United are looking to sign the Englishman in a cut-price deal and the Merseyside club are reportedly willing to let him go.
Stuart Downing, who started his career at Middlesbrough, had a difficult start to his Liverpool career since his big money move from Aston Villa back in 2011. His inconsistency has drawn criticism from fans and experts alike and his future at Anfield remains in doubt. But the second half of last season saw him put in some good performances and provided hope that he could still be a part of Brendan Rodgers’ future plans at Liverpool. The 29-year-old has recently revealed his wish to remain at Liverpool after working hard to establish himself in the first team last season.
“I feel settled now. The first year at Liverpool was difficult but once I established myself in the team last season I really enjoyed it.
“That’s why I don’t want to leave. If you are playing with good players in a good team then you don’t want to lose that.” – The Liverpool winger said recently.
But it seems Downing has fallen further down the pecking order, behind the likes of Coutinho, Sterling and new summer recruit Iago Aspas. Although Downing did play a part in the opening three matches of Liverpool’s preseason campaign, he was a unused substitute in the last two games. West Ham United were reportedly interested in securing his service earlier this summer, but and recent reports suggest that Newcastle United are the favorites to sign him.
The Magpies are keen on signing the former Aston Villa winger in a cut-price deal of £5 million and Liverpool echo reports that Liverpool are willing to sell him. The Merseyside club signed Downing for a fee of £20 million from Aston Villa, but are willing to endure the big loss in order to clear up the wage bill after a host of new arrivals this summer. Stuart Downing, who is part of the squad that will face Valerenga, is expected to hold final talks with Brendan Rodgers regarding his future.
Napoli looking to loan Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel
The Italian club, who have already signed Pepe Reina on loan, want a similar deal for Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel as Rafa Benitez builds a strong squad at Napoli.
The 28-year-old’s future at Anfield has been up for speculation this summer after his highly inconsistent performances last season. Liverpool have already signed former Arsenal and Manchester City defender Kolo Toure on a free transfer this summer and Brendan Rodgers is reportedly looking to add one more defender to the squad. If Liverpool manage to land their targets, Skrtel’s place in the starting line-up will be in doubts.
Former Liverpool manager is looking to add the Slovakian international to the Napoli squad, having already secured Pepe Reina from the English club. The Italian club want to sign Skrtel on a year-long loan deal, with an option to make it permanent in the end. Napoli star and fellow countrymen, Marek Hamsik, has also reportedly urged Skrtel to join him at Naples. But it is believed that Liverpool are only interested in a permanent deal and are willing to sell the defender at the right price. Napoli have already made some big signings this summer, since the departure of Edinson Cavani to PSG. The arrival of likes of Higuain, Albiol, Reina and Callejon means they are expected to give Juventus a run for their money in the Serie A title race. Also the fact that the Italian club can provide Skrtel with Champions League football, makes them a very attractive option for him.
But the question remains, despite his poor form of late, does Liverpool have the depth in their defense, especially after the retirement of Jamie Carragher and uncertain future of Sebastian Coates, to loan out or sell Skrtel? This deal looks unlikely – until Liverpool manages to sign another central defender this summer.
