Liverpool FC goalkeeper Pepe Reina has welcomed the possible addition of Simon Mignolet to the squad, while the Belgium international’s agent says that the deal is yet to be completed.
Mignolet is currently one of the most sought-after custodian in the Premier League. The 25-year-old, who joined Sunderland back in 2010, has been their most consistent performer over the last two seasons. He is one of the prime reason why Paolo Di Canio’s side survived the drop. Mignolet has made 149 saves (in 38 appearances) in the Premier League this season, and has kept 11 clean sheets along the way.
Arsenal and Napoli were earlier linked with a move for the Sunderland goalkeeper, but Liverpool were always the front-runner in this race for his signature. In the past few days it was heavily reported that both the clubs have reached an agreement for a fee £11m. But his agent Guy Vandermissen has now said that they are yet to be informed of any ‘agreement’. He also stated that this is a massive move in his career and insisted that Mignolet would relish the competition he is set to receive from Pepe Reina for the number one jersey.
“We hope that there can be a deal and he can go to Liverpool.
“If you go from Sunderland to Liverpool it is a big step forward. You have to make decisions at certain times.
“I know the qualities of Simon and he can cope with any competition, it is no problem.” – Mignolet’s agent was quoted in press.
His agent also faced questions regarding Liverpool’s absence from European competition, but Vandermissen concluded that competing against top teams of England is no less than playing the European competitions.
“When you play Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Arsenal every week, this is European football, so what is the problem?” – he added.
Pepe Reina welcomes Simon Mignolet to Anfield
Pepe Reina was heavily linked with a move away from, Anfield this summer, with Barcelona and Napoli reportedly interested in signing him. But the Spaniard and his agent has recently released statement quashing all those rumours. Reina looks to carry on his career at Liverpool and manager Brendan Rodgers has also indicated that the Simon Mignolet is not being signed to prepare for Reina’s departure.
The arrival of the Belgium international, who has had a fantastic season with Sunderland will provide Reina with competition for the goalkeeping spot in the starting line-up. But Reina has welcomed this competition and has insisted that he will help out Mignolet if and the deal completes.
“It has not changed a bit. I have said it many times, I’m very comfortable and very happy at Liverpool.
“Every team needs competitors, and when it’s positive it is more than welcome. If it is finally done I’ll welcome him a lot, and anything he needs, I’m here.” – The Liverpool custodian told in press conference at the Confederations Cup.
