The 24-year-old has been earmarked to be an integral part of the Brazilian national team in the future, and now it looks like only a matter of time before he makes a move to Europe with a host of clubs monitoring his progress at Vasco.
The Brazilian club has accepted that the defender will be sold in order improve the deteriorating financial condition of the club. Vasco’s Director General Cristiano Koehler has said in an interview that Dede holds bigger ambitions and also the fact that the club has to prioritize its ‘balance sheet’.
“We can’t mislead the fans, we will find it very difficult to hold on to Dede because the club needs the resources, and at some point it will happen – by the middle of the year.
“The desire of all is that he stays, but we have to prioritise the payment of wages, taxes and federal agreements, so it is inevitable we will have to sell – so it is possible, in the middle of the year when the sale goes through, we can use the money to restructure the club and make it safe.
“The player is ambitious and he also wants to experience better opportunities with better pay, and the partners in his ownership want to make the agreement now to develop their investment.
“We have a balance sheet we must meet, and we can’t hide the fact.” – Koehler was quoted in press.
So in all likelihood Dede, who considered to be the best defender plying his trade in Brazil, will experience European football next season. The center-back is a hard tackler and also excellent in the air. But Dede’s transfer might bring along some complexities as he is only partially owned by Vasco. Like most of the South American superstars – various investment groups holds some percentage in the right for the player’s registration. In Dede’s case, there are two other investment groups involved in this.
But reports also suggest that Liverpool have moved ahead in the race for his signature as they are already in contact with one of the investment group regarding Dede’s sale. It is believed that the Reds are looking to replace Carragher, who is set to retire at the end of this season, with the Brazilian. Also the fact that there are doubts about Coates’ future at the club means that Dede is likely to get more first team opportunities at Anfield than he will receive Old Trafford.
