Michu has called on his club, Swansea City, to sign Liverpool’s Iago Aspas on loan in the January transfer window.
Liverpool’s Spanish forward has got a tough start to his life in England following his £7.2million summer move from Celta Vigo. After a good pre-season, Aspas had a bad start to life in the Premier League. After given four starts, he has remained on the bench and gained three substitute appearances for the club. The Spaniard also suffered an injury blow which kept him out of the squad for a while. He has yet to score for the Anfield giants.
Aspas, who saved his previous club from relegation last season was clearly unhappy with him warming the bench but wowed to keep working hard, commented earlier:
I’m finding it hard to be a sub at Liverpool having started games in the past few years. When I left Celta Vigo I was aware that to start for Liverpool wasn’t going to be easy. And now the team is winning and we are among the leaders in the Premier League, it’s much hard to get a game. I hope to carry on working hard and little by little to get more game time with Liverpool. I want to change the current situation.
The Spaniard clearly fell behind the ranks in Liverpool because of the presence of the club’s premier strikers- Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge. However, once Sturridge was ruled out of playing due to injury, people thought that Aspas might find himself in the starting squad. That has unfortunately still not been the case.
There seems to be a ray of hope for the 26 year old as he finds himself wanted at Swansea by his compatriots. It should be noted that Swansea also wanted to sign Aspas in the summer but were beaten to it by Liverpool.
We (Swansea’s players) are hoping he can come here on loan. It would be a pleasure to play with him. Iago has had injuries, but he has quality. He deserves to play in the Premier League. He has been unlucky. At Liverpool, they have Luis Suarez and Sturridge, who have scored a lot of goals. Suarez is, along with Diego Costa and others, one of the best strikers in Europe.
THT verdict: Likely
Aspas is clearly not the player Liverpool want at the moment. While he might still be a quality player, it seems unlikely that the Spaniard will have many chances in the coming future. The Reds boss is not utilizing him when Sturridge is out of contention; it seems highly unlikely that he will when the England international is fit again. The loan move would be good for the player as he will get some game time and return back to the form which saw him play exceptionally well for Celta Vigo. With a return in form, Aspas and Liverpool can both hope that he will have a future at Liverpool next season onwards.
