We are back with yet another edition of Rival Rendezvous as Juventus gear up to host Milan in what could probably be the last of the glamorous clashes for both the sides in the season.

Juventus v AC Milan

As another big game approaches, we are back. There’s this one element in football that brings out that someone within us who refuses what’s popularly rational. But that’s the best part of the sport, one might argue; that it extracts the most naturally passionate emotions out of you and allows you to momentarily step off the rather forced upon sanity.

These big games serve this very purpose in a football fan’s life and the authors here at TheHardTackle are nomore immune to this phenomenon than you are. As Juventus and Milan gear up for the second tie of the season in Turin, there should be plenty of mouth-watering battles played out on the pitch. But here, we are presenting you one between two of our Serie A editors as they unleash the fan within to defend their respective club against the other’s.

Somnath Sengupta (SS hereafter) is well known within the Juventus circles for being a walking encyclopedia of everything that is pertaining to the game of football and is not someone you’d prefer getting into an argument with. But despite knowing what’s at stake, Parth Pandya (PP hereafter)Ai??has risen up and decided to take the field. While both of them have remained particularly watchful of maintaining the required levels of gentlemanliness throughout this conversation, kindly excuse them for the banter going slightly overboard from time to time.

Reversing the usual order, we today have the host here forcing his guest to face the music straightaway.

SS: If Silvio Berlusconi wins the election it may prove to be the only trophy Milan fans get to celebrate this season. Or are you guys still sad about Il Gol de Muntari?

PP: I have a fair idea of the levels to which Juventus fans choose to remain delusional and more often than not it does reflect in your arithmetical skills too but the audacity with which you lot tend to trivialize the impact of Tagliavento on your 30th (or whatever number you prefer there) title, beats even the general Juve standards.

Well, as far as our celebrations are concerned, we are more than happy with the kind of resolve that our team has showed this season against all odds and are already celebrating that. We are confident we can only get better from here. And Berlusconi is so awesome he needs no reasons to ai???celebrateai??i??, if you know what I mean.

SS:Ai??Boy, that escalated quickly. Of course. Who doesn’t know the celebratory exploits of your President? Anyway, Max Allegri came under a barrage of criticism during start of this season. He has steadied the ship after that. Despite all his weaknesses he is a tactically sound coach who handles pressure well. But do you see him leading AC Milan back to their glory days in future? Or does the club need a step up in quality?

PP: I have always been of one opinion about Max Allegri ai??i?? That he is a fantastic coach and hugely underrated because of the lack of competition during the 2010-11 season. His only weakness is he does not time his substitutions as accurately as he should but having said that, what he has achieved with the limitations of this squad in every department is commendable speaking the least. Heai??i??s a tad too defensive at times but that should change with the kind of faith that Berlusconi has in him. I am totally convinced heai??i??s the one who can lead us back to the glory ai??i?? whether he does it or not is a different matter but he does have the merit to accomplish that, is my point.

SS: Fair enough. Mario Balotelli has been the primary reason behind Milanai??i??s form in 2013 as El Shaarawyai??i??s form has dipped. He is bound to be a big miss against Juventus. How will Allegri make up for his absence?

PP: Yes, nobody can deny Balotelli is one of the biggest reasons for this historic turnaround if not the biggest one himself. With the kind of expectations that Milan fans had of him and the more than expected jeers that he was supposed to attract from every other possible corner in Italy, his performances so far have been truly sensational. However, it will be unfair to say El Shaarawyai??i??s form has dipped. Yes, he hasnai??i??t been scoring the same amount of goals post winter but his contribution still remains as important.

Balotelli will be the biggest miss not only for Milan but also for the Juve fans in the stadium whoai??i??d have otherwise, Iai??i??m pretty sure, been all geared up with some banners paying fines for which may well have drilled a hole in Agnelliai??i??s pockets.

SS:Ai??Wouldn’t completely disagree after what happened during the local derby. But, let’s move on. Panorama.it brings out a Serie A table adjusted with refereeing mistakes every season. This seasonai??i??s shows Juventus would have gotten 4 more points if not for refereeing mistakes while Milan would have had same number of points as Inter without refereeing errors. Even the first match between Milan and Juventus in San Siro was decided by a non-penalty call by the referee. Do you think the standard of refereeing in Serie A has gone down compared to rest of the top leagues?

PP: I need to take a lesson or two from them at viewing things selectively, I feel. I hope you havenai??i??t forgotten about Milan being robbed in the games against Inter and Fiorentina or for that matter Juventus overturning a correct decision in Sicily. The truth is, no big club in Italy stands a right to speak against another one as far as refereeing blunders are concerned ai??i?? so many they are.

I am of an opinion that the standards of the league in general are far too inferior when compared to the others that are run way more professionally and the incompetence of the officials is only a consequence. I am not exactly an optimist about Italian football changing for better in the foreseeable future and hence unfortunately weai??i??ll need to remain content with passing the blame on one another when our respective club is at the receiving end and overlook things when weai??i??re benefitted out of it ai??i?? Not really an enviable scenario but weai??i??ve gotten comfortably used to it.

SS: How damaging will it be for a club of AC Milanai??i??s stature if they fail to qualify for Championsai??i?? League? Which team do you consider as the main threat for a third place finish?

PP: To clear the air, I am extremely positive about Milan finishing inside the Champions League positions but only for the sake of the hypothesis in question here, Iai??i??d say it will be way more damaging than say, an Inter or a Juve not making it there since Europe has always been Milanai??i??s domain. Fans are so obsessed with big European nights and should the club be missing out on the Champions League for the second time in five years, Berlusconi will face some serious wrath from Curva Sud.

As of now, Milan are comfortably placed at the third spot but things can turn around in no time. The lack of depth will be a deterrent for Lazio as the season approaches the culmination point while I am confident of Roma continuing to be, for the lack of choice of a better word, Roma. Fiorentina is the only genuine threat for the spot and Milan will need to be extremely wary of them.

SS: Well, with that, I’d conclude. Shoot in what you’ve got. The stage is all yours.

PP:Ai??Ah well, I expected you to show no mercy whatsoever, Som. I too shall try to match the levels of cordialness. So then, 7 more points in next 6 games is all thatai??i??s needed now. All geared up to celebrate the, uh, 33rd title and the 4th star, may be? Jokes apart, thereai??i??s a good chance to win a title on 5th May now. How fascinating does that seem?

SS: Itai??i??s 31st actually. It doesnai??i??t matter what FIGC says, Juventus have won 30 league titles and thatai??i??s the way it is going to be.

5th May 2002 is a golden day in history of the club when Inter were once again shown that the only way they can win league titles was using off field tactics. Prior to the triumph last season, that Scudetto was easily the most enjoyable win I have experienced as a Juventus fan. Conte was a part of that team as were Buffon and Nedved, who is in the board-room now. They are bound to motivate the players that extra bit to seal the title on that day. It will be even more enjoyable given the laughable condition Inter are in right now.

PP:Ai??Yes, a Juventino’s bitterness for Inter needs no explanation but let’s talk about Milan. I remember at the beginning of the season, how Juve fans loved to take digs at Milan and particularly at Allegri. How does it feel to have been forced to eat humble pie after the tremendous turnaround that we have managed this season? Also, seeing Montolivo consistently dishing out quality performances must have been hard. I know how conveniently you lot overlooked his brilliance at the Euros and continued to ridicule his selection but hey, he doesnai??i??t seem to care too much about it and might very well be our best player against Juve ai??i?? for the second time in the season, I might add.

SS: I still maintain my stance on Allegri. He is a strictly mediocre coach (in Ranieri level). Milan’s start to the season was an aberration. They were reacting negatively to losing a host of starters including Ibra and Silva but their squad quality was always better than the table position suggested at that time. It was a matter of time before Milan picked themselves up and it didn’t take a tactical master-class from Allegri for that. From last season they have been dependent on one player overtly in offence. It was Ibra then and El Shaaraway stepped in this season. Much more than Allegri I will give credit to Galliani who once again showed he is the best in the business currently. Mario Balotelli was an inspired signing and I don’t think Milan would have been at their current position if they had not signed him in winter.

Montolivo’s case is similar to how Milan fans react about Claudio Marchisio and Leonardo Bonucci despite the duo improving by leaps and bounds in past 2 seasons. None of Italy’s outfield players except Pirlo played well consistently throughout Euros. Montolivo had a couple of good games so did Marchisio and heck, even Diamanti. Montolivo has been consistent this season but it’s not like he is the reincarnation of Riviera in Milan. He looks better because he is the only creative player in a midfield which is bereft of creativity otherwise. In the land of blind the one eyed man is a king. Reminds me of Felipe Melo being the best Juventus player in Gigi Delneri’s season.

PP:Ai??Speaking of Juventus, there was never a doubt thereai??i??s no team competing with them for the title this season. Does that make the European humiliation even bitterer considering league was never even a contest in the first place?

SS: Juventus have achieved so much under Conte so quickly in Serie A that people’s expectation has reached a bloated level. I didn’t expect Juventus to knock Bayern out, who for me is the best team in Europe this season, regardless of their eventual finish in UCL. I was disappointed at how the team played in Turin but we need to remember this was a learning experience for Conte as well as Juventus players. To put things into perspective, Heynckes had already managed for six seasons when Conte started his senior career. He has won UCL before, found success with multiple big clubs in multiple countries while Conte was managing Siena just three years back. Conte did make some tactical mistakes like playing Peluso but Bayern are a significantly better team. I still think the starting defence and midfield for both teams are at par but there is a gigantic gulf of class in attack. Juventus has Emmanuele Giaccherini to replace Pirlo in midfield, Bayern replaced Kroos by Arjen Robben. Thomas Muller is still in his early 20s and has played more finals than entire Juventus squad combined, if we leave out Pirlo.

Take Borussia Dortmund for example. They finished bottom of their group when they played their first UCL under an inexperienced manager the first season but improved dramatically next season, though they failed in the league. For me, this was still a successful enough UCL campaign. Till quarter final Juventus had accumulated second highest amount of UCL coeff points and are the second highest mover in UEFA club rankling after PSG. Conte’s team came back from a 2-0 deficit in Stamford Bridge, something that hasn’t happened in Roman Abrahamovic era, inflicted the worst defeat on Chelsea in years and beaten Shakhtar in Donetsk when they had a 100% home win record this season. Few, very few teams win 3-0 in Celtic Park, not even Marcelo Lippi’s team managed to do that. Despite the highly underwhelming end, this was overall a successful enough UCL campaign.

PP:Ai??Yes, there are number of positive takeaways from this season’s Champions League. I agree. But at the same time, Iai??i??m sure thereai??i??s no real scope of disagreement when I say that Milan has remained the Italian pride in Europe and things donai??i??t look like changing soon. With some hopeful reinforcements in the summer, Milan could very well be back on track in Europe next season and Iai??i??m not getting carried away here, I realize the Champions League spot is far from won yet. But Juve on the other hand, already have a very impressive squad depth. What do you think still lacks to win glory in Europe? Or is it just about the culture and mentality? Some clubs have it and some, well, just donai??i??t.

SS: Milan have been more successful in Europe but the biggest difference here is the fact that Juventus have lost way too many finals. It’s not like Juventus have a poor record in Europe; just that the club failed at the final hurdle. Besides, Ai??Milan can bask in their past glory all they want but they are unlikely to go anywhere in Champions League in next few seasons. Serie A is no longer an attractive location for best players and few Italian players are world class these days. No one, lauds Nottingham Forest or Aston Villa to be the pride of England ahead of Arsenal, do they?

PP:Ai??That’s an inappropriate analogy to be honest, but whatever sails your boat. Let me come to this game. Ai??The title is over from where I see it. But how important will it be to win the bragging rights with a win over Milan? A win here could allow Juve to conclude the season on the perfect note with the remainder of fixtures being relatively unimportant ones.

SS: Despite the recent bitterness, I don’t think the rivalry between Milan and Juventus is as bitter as that with Inter. If Milan win or draw in Turin it may give them a bragging right but that may be one of the few successes they get this season. Juventus, meanwhile, will focus on more tangible success like titles. It’s actually bit of a privilege to think that a club with 18 international titles thinks getting bragging rights over is a big event.

PP: Well, it looks like that’s what we will need to continue doing for a while. As our team is still building and our title count too follows the normal arithmetical rules while progressing so….

SS:Ai??Oh, that’s a very strong statement I must say. As strong as Nocerino’s defensive abilities, may be?

PP:Ai??Good luck for the game!
