Former Juventus defender, Angelo Di Livio, has urged AS Roma To Sign Andrea Barzagli.
Di Livio, who started his senior career at Roma, feels that the Aurelio Andreazzoli’s side needs to strengthen their defence in order to compete for titles next season. The former Italian international believes that the rest of the squad, attack and midfield, are in good shape already. When one looks at the statistics, there is enough material to support his claim.
Roma has second worst defence in the league. Statistically (49), behind Pescara and contrastingly, they have scored the most number of goals (60) in the league as well. With a tighter defence, they could have challenged for Serie A title this season, although their defensive vulnerability had much with do with the way Zdenek Zeman set up his team before he was sacked.
Despite his hopes of seeing Barzagli at Rome, Di Livio was sceptical about the transfer fee that Juventus might demand for their defender.
“I really do wish that Roma would sign Barzagli. The midfield and attack are in good shape but the defensive department could be really reinforced with the signing of Barzagli.
“In a three man defence like Juventus use, you would pay a lot of money for a central defender as good as him.” – The former Juventus defender was quoted in press.
But it looks highly unlikely that Juventus would let go of Barzagli any time soon. The 31-year-old has been Juventus’s most consistent performer in the last two seasons and the best Italian defender during this period. He was vital to Juventus’ unbeaten run last season, which saw him pick up the Serie A defender of the year award. Moreover, he has just signed a contract extension last month and is probably the least likely to be sold right now.
