FC Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta, who has been recently linked with a move to Manchester United, has signed a new contract with the club.
Amidst the growing speculation regarding President Sandro Rossell’s alleged fraud, Barcelona fans have some good news today. Firstly, Iniesta has officially extended his contract and secondly, Messi is making good progress from his injury.
Andres Iniesta has extended his contract at FC Barcelona till 2018. President Sandro Rosell used his media appearance today to announce the renewal of contract. The player’s contract was due to expire in 2015, but has now been officially extended for a further three years.
Iniesta won his place in the team without making a song and dance about it. But by the 2005/06 season he had become a key member of what became a Liga and Champions League double winning side. From then on, Iniesta became one of Europe’s most admired footballers as he helped the team to its greatest ever period of success.
Iniesta scored a memorable goal at Stamford Bridge in 2009 against Chelsea to pave the way for trophy laden season, and a run of titles that has continued through to the present day.
Iniesta has made 479 official appearances for FC Barcelona, scoring 48 goals and winning a total of 21 major trophies.
He has won no fewer than 16 major trophies with FC Barcelona in five and a half seasons, as well as enjoying further success in the international arena, winning back-to-back European Championships and the first ever World Cup for Spain – and it was Iniesta’s goal against Holland in the final that won it.
Iniesta will be 34 on June 30, 2018, which will mean he will have been at the club for an incredible 22 years. He first arrived at FC Barcelona in September 1996, when he was only 12. By the 2000/01 season he was making the switch from the U19 team to Barça B and in October 2002 he played his first game for the first team in Bruges.
The extension of Iniesta’s contract has put the cold water on recent rumours linking him with Manchester United.
Messi Good Progress from Injury
Report in Spanish daily Marca has claimed today that Lionel Messi is making inroads on the comeback trail. The physical examination and ultrasound performed on Wednesday by Dr Ricard Pruna showed that the muscle tear in the star’s left hamstring is progressing well, Barcelona has revealed.
“On Friday further tests will be performed to establish when he can begin the third phase of his recovery programme,” a Barcelona statement reads.
“Doctor Ricard Pruna, along with sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta, travelled to Argentina on Tuesday to get a first-hand look at the progress being made by Leo Messi.
“The striker injured his hamstring on November 10 and since November 29 has been working on the second phase of his recovery programme in his home country.
“He started working under supervision of Dr. Daniel Martinez and kinesiologist Luis Garcia, members of the medical team that works with the Argentina national team.
“He was later joined by Barcelona physio Elvio Paolorosso, as had originally been planned.”
Further tests will be carried out on Friday at the Argentinian Football Association base in Buenos Aires in order to set a time frame for the start of the third phase of the forward’s recovery and fitness programme.
