Oscar Bruzan Barreras took over charge of Sporting Clube de Goa in the mid-season last year. Sporting was languishing in the relegation zone and Oscar did not just helped them to save relegation but also made them finish in the top half of the table. Oscar Bruzan who now have a 3 year contract with Sporting Clube de Goa have brought in self confidence in young Sporting Clube de Goa team. The HardTackle takes a look at flaming orange squad and what we could expect from them in the I-league 2013/14.

Sporting Clube de Goa in the second half of last season I-league was the revolution under their talismanic coach Oscar Bruzan Barreras. Sporting Clube de Goa was in the relegation zone and confidence of the players was at rock bottom. The Spaniard brought in a lot of confidence in youngsters which enabled them to give the solid performance game after game. Sporting Clube de Goa finished sixth last season.

Oscar had a full pre-season to prepare his players for the upcoming season and he did show lots of intent by bringing in various different techniques which was unheard of in Indian Football. The drills have certainly raised the performance level of players in the team. Sporting Clube de Goa performance in the ongoing Goa Pro League has been excellent. The team has defeated big boys such as Dempo SC and Salgaocar FC and placed in 2nd position.

Sporting Clube de Goa have lost a couple of important members of last year team such as Adil Khan to Mohun Bagan and Bruno Colaco to Bangaloru FC who was rock solid under the bar for Sporting last season. Oscar has been able to find suitable replacement for the two players and even signed few more first team players to bolster the squad for the upcoming season.

Squad Analysis

Goal Keepers: Ravi Kumar, Melroy Fernandes, Saurav Chakraborty.

Sporting Clube de Goa had an excellent goalkeeper the form of 21 year old Bruno Colaco. The youngster was excellent for the flaming Orange. The Club after losing Bruno to Bangaloru based side have able to rope in Pailan Arrow Goal Keeper Ravi Kumar and Goa Santosh Trophy team goalkeeper Melroy Fernandes. They even have Saurav Chakraborty as back goalkeeper.

Ravi Kumar had an inconsistent season last year and he would like to give some good account himself with his new club. Melroy Fernandes was first choice goalkeeper for the Goa Santosh Trophy team and performance was satisfactory. The two youngsters will have to raise their bar and do well in I-League now.

Defenders: Mathew Gonsalves, Deeoak Devrani, Rojen Singh, Arturo Navarro, Gonajola Hinojal, Baboy Singh, Joyner Laurenco, Wellington Fernandes, Keenan Almeida.

Sporting Clube de Goa has always been found wanting when it comes to their defence. The club always concedes a lot of goals. An Even lot of times we see that club concede goals after taking a lead. To stop these leaking goals Coach Oscar Bruzan has roped in two Spainiard defenders Arturo Navarro who played for Valencia and Gonajalo Hinojal. Both Spanish Due have got to adjust to the Humid Goan condition and given a good account of them in Goa Pro League. The duo has not played together so far for the club but expect to give a solid performance as a pair. They will have good support from club longest serving players and captain Mathew Gonsalves on the back.

The club also able to add India Junior International and former Pailan Arrows stopper back Deepak Devrani to the roster. The Delhi lad will have to earn his place as stopper back. The youngster had an excellent season with Paillan Arrows and will take this opportunity to improve his game. He will have to work hard to get started XI place with Arturo and Hinojal in the team.

The club even drafted in Wellington Fernandes and Keenan Almeida from their youth ranks. Physically strong lad Keenan has been impressive so far in the Goa Pro League and we could expect him to make his debut this season in I-League.

Midfielder: Beevan D’mello, Cajetan Fernandes, Jowel Martines, Pratesh Shirodkar, Bishweshwor Singh, Mackroy Peixote, Joseph Pereira, Rowlin Borges, Rovan Pereira, Ogba Kalu Nnanna. Velerio Rodrigues, Veletio Cruz, Pedro Gonsalves, Mauvin Borges.  

Adil Khan will be key figure who would be missing from the roster of Sporting Clube de Goa. The versatile midfielder has shifted his base to Kolkata for Mohun Bagan.

Sporting Clube de Goa have retained a lot of players and likes of Rowlin Borges, Rovan Pereira is well accustomed to the I-League now. The youngsters in ongoing Goa Pro league have performed well. Their performance shows a lot of maturity in them and we could expect the same performance from the in I-league.

Pratesh Shirodkar short but Skitty customer has been sensationally for the Sporting Clube de Goa last season. SESA FA graduate was quick on the field in his first season and did not bog down to the pressure of I-League. His excellent performance in his first season fetched his award of being the Best player of the club last season.

Nigerian playmaker Ogba Kalu will again take responsibility of creating chances for his forwards. The influential midfielder looked to repeat his last year performance for the club. The Nigerian was highest goal scorer for the club and surely a threat for the rivals.

Sporting Clube de Goa has captured the signing of one the talented players from Goa Mauvin Borges. Mauvin Borges was awarded as Best U-20 players of the Goa Last year at Inaugral Goa International Football Table organized. The versatile player could play as Winger, Wing Beck and also as a striker. The skillful player has been in good form in Goa pro league and has kept the rival defence on the toes.

Forwards: Boima Karpeh, Victorino Fernandes, Dawson Fernandes.

Boima Karpeh has been one of the biggest signings of the club this season. The physically strong striker had a good season with Pune FC last year. The defendants have a wealth of experience playing in various leagues in Asia. The Striker has started his rampage with club in Goa Pro league with scoring goals.

Dawson Fernandes certainly would be high on confidence going into the season. The Striker got his first call up for the national team because of his consistent performance for the club. The youngster is yet to cement his place in National team and certainly would look to keep performing at club level to get the regular call up in the national team.

Another striker in the team is Victorino Fernandes. The youngster has done well so far for the club coming from the bench on a number of occasions. The youngster will look to take get a regular start for that he has to work really hard.


Sporting Clube de Goa under Oscar Bruzan look a well organized unit. The youngsters in the team are hungry for success. With the performances they are given in I-League 2012/13 and ongoing Goa Pro League we certainly expect them to get one more top half finish.
