Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain and Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina have completed their medical ahead of their move to Napoli.
Napoli have agreed a deal with Real Madrid for the Argentine international and the transfer fee involved is believed to be around £34.5 M. Higuain’s future at Spain was up for speculation this summer after the striker announced his desire to leave. Arsenal were heavily linked with a move for the 25-year-old, but Real Madrid raised their demands and the deal failed to materialize. Arsenal certainly didn’t value Higuain at the price Napoli were willing to pay. Higuain’s transfer now also means that Arsenal will be desperate to land Suarez this summer.
Earlier today Higuain was spotted at Rome’s Fiumicino airport and was headed towards Villa Stuart sport clinic in order to undergo his medical.
Napoli midfielder Blerim Dzemaili has recently welcomed the arrival of Higuain in a press conference. Dzemaili believes it will help in raising the profile of league and the team.
“When players from Real Madrid come to Napoli, it must be a reason for pride for Napoli and the Italian league.” – The Napoli midfielder told the press.
Higuain comes in as a direct replacement for Edinson Cavani, who joined PSG this summer. Napoli are investing a large chunk of the huge transfer fee they earned from the sale of the Uruguayan international, but with very few world-class strikers left in the market, the high transfer fee seemed inevitable. But the Italian club have also conducted some smart business moves in this window. They have already completed the signing of Dries Mertens, Jose Callejon and Raul Albiol, and they have also completed their move for Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina.
Reina joins Napoli on a one-year loan deal, with the option to make it permanent in the end. The goalkeeper’s arrival at the Italian club will also see him reunite with former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez.
“He’s happy to reunite with Benítez because he’s known him for over five years from their time in Spain and England, and they worked very well together.” – Reina’s agent, Manuel Garcia Quilon was quoted in the press.
Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has now confirmed that both Higuain and Reina have passed their medicals and will be unveiled on Monday to the fans.
“Higuain and Reina have passed their medicals and will soon join the rest of the group. On Monday there will be a big party at the San Paolo. You will be able to get to know the new players and the new shirts.” – The Napoli president tweeted from his account.
Pepe Reina’s future at the Liverpool was up for speculations this season, especially after the arrival of Simon Mignolet from Sunderland. Although Brendan Rodgers initially insisted that the goalkeeper will not be sold, it seems Reina is looking for regular first team action and this season at Liverpool, he was unlikely to get that.
