Chelsea FC midfielder Frank Lampard is close to signing a new contract with the club according to reports in the English media.
The fans have been crying out for it this season. It seemed everyone except the Chelsea management wanted the club to renew the contract of Frank Lampard. The England international, concreted his status as a club legend after he became the all-time leading goal scorer for Chelsea with a brace against Aston Villa this weekend. The brace not only took him past the record of Bobby Tambling, it also confirmed Chelsea’s top four status (along with the all-important Champions League qualification) this season.
What is even more incredible is the fact that he has achieved this feat despite being a midfielder. The 34-year-old is the club’s top scorer in the league this season with 15 goals in just 20 starts. Earlier this season, it was revealed that Chelsea aren’t interested in extending Lampard’s contract which is set to expire at the end of this season. But now, according to reports in the English media, the club has had a change of heart and have offered a one-year extension to Lampard, although he will be expected to take a massive pay-cut on his current wages.
According to reports in the Telegraph, Lampard has ‘agreed’ to sign the new contract. This would end the speculation about his future, which saw him being linked with a move to MLS side LA Galaxy and French club Monaco. Although it must be noted that Chelsea have declined to confirm this report so far and the fans are still waiting for an official confirmation.
The midfielder is expected to captain the side against Benfica in tonight’s big Europa League final, in the absence of John Terry and the Englishman could collect his second big European medal in as many years.
