Manchester United returned to winning ways in the league with a convincing win against Aston Villa at Villa Park.
This was a must win game for United after losing their last two league matches at home against Everton and Newcastle United. David Moyes’ men produced one of their best performances in the league so far on the day and managed a 0-3 win over Aston Villa. It was also their first clean-sheet away from home in the league and their first since the 1-0 win over Arsenal at Old Trafford. This match was the start of a relatively easy run of fixtures and David Moyes will hope that his side can now build up momentum in the league and close the gap at the top.
For Aston Villa, this was their second defeat in a row after losing to Fulham in their last game. They have now conceded seven goals in their last three matches and would hope for a better performance against Stoke City. They had their moments in this match, but Paul Lambert will be worried about how vulnerable his defence looked in this game.
The home side made a bright start and caused some early problems for United, but the away side grew into the game as the half progressed and Danny Welbeck scored two goals in space of three minutes. The first of which arrived when Rafael’s cross was headed onto the far post by Adnan Januzaj, Welbeck reacted quickly to the rebound and turned it into the back of the net, while is second also arrived from a cross from the right wing, this time Valencia put in a delightful ball into the box and Welbeck applied the finishing touches.
Aston Villa didn’t cause too many problems for the remaining of the first half as Rooney controlled the game in the midfield. The England international displayed his passing range as he dropped deep and delivered some fantastic cross field balls. United extended their lead just seven minutes into the second half as Tom Cleverley scored his first goal of the season. The midfielder was set up by a lovely ball from Rooney and he thrashed it past Guzan at the near post. The match ended in a convincing win for United and the icing on the cake was the return of Darren Fletcher to the side.
David Moyes was delighted with the win but insisted that there wasn’t much of a difference between the performance in this game and how they performed against Everton and Newcastle, except for the fact that they managed to score.
“I don’t think there was an awful lot of difference [in the games], except we obviously scored the goals.
“We have not been scoring and goals change how it looks, mainly for the media, but we know we have to play better as well and we have to play better than we did today again. It continually has to improve and I will make sure it gets better over the coming months.
“I think we will play much better, I have told the players that is the least we can do and we have to keep going and win more games.
“It was a good job done, the players played well and the only thing I could be critical of was that we didn’t score more goals.
“Antonio Valencia was very good and young Adnan [Januzaj] is still learning his trade and will be a really talented player in the future. We played well but were a little bit sloppy in the opening five minutes or so but after that I thought we played really, really well.” – The Manchester United manager said.
He was also full of praise for Danny Welbeck, who looked bright and sharp in the game.
“Danny Welbeck is someone who we know he needs to keep scoring goals, he was good today and was a threat and could have had more today.
“It would have been nice for him to get a hat-trick but two is a good tally for him.
“Tom has been playing okay and today I thought he played really well, passed it well and took the ball and ended up with a goal from midfield as well.” – He added.
