Wolfsburg midfielder Diego has disclosed his interest in signing for Arsenal FC or Southampton next summer.

The 28-year-old midfielder has been in good form for Wolfsburg this season and has helped the club to get off to a good start in the Bundesliga. The Brazilian, who joined the club back in 2010, has previously had spells with Porto, Werder Bremen, Juventus and most recently with Atletico Madrid. But Diego has established himself at the German club since returning from his loan spell in Spain last season.

Diego’s current contract expires in 2014 and there has been speculation regarding his future at the club. The midfielder will be free to talk with other interested clubs in January and so far no progress has been made by Wolfsburg to secure his future. Diego said in an interview that he is happy at the club and is waiting on the club before making his final decision. He is also considering his other options at the moment and report suggest that Arsenal and Southampton are monitoring his situation. Diego has revealed that he aware of interest from both these clubs and expressed his desire to play for the Gunners if the opportunity arises.

“I know there is interest from Premier League clubs. I have heard Arsenal is one of them.

“It would be the ideal destination for me because their style suits my characteristics perfectly. Of course I would say ‘yes’ to Arsenal.

“Southampton have great organisation and discipline and big talents like Adam Lallana. But again there is nothing concrete.

“Playing in England is a very attractive option at the peak of my career but I’m focusing on helping Wolfsburg get to the Champions League.” – The Brazilian was quoted in the press.

Wolfsburg have a great opportunity to push for a place in the Champions League this season and they only three points behind Borussia Monchengladbach, who currently occupy the fourth spot in the league. Diego is a key component of their side and losing him for free next season could be a blow for them.

Despite Diego’s revelation, Arsenal interest in him is questionable as they have plenty of players who can play in that role in the squad at the moment. The only logic behind a move for him in the summer would be to replace Tomas Rosicky. The 33-year-old’s future at the club has come under a lot of speculation and this could possibly be the last season of his Arsenal career. But Diego might not be the ideal replacement for him. While the Brazilian does possess brilliant vision and technique, he is a bit slow to succeed in a team like Arsenal.

Southampton on the other hand looks a more likely destination for the midfielder. They have started this season on fine form and are sure to finish in the top-half of the table this season. They have been solid defensively but in order to compete with other clubs at the top Southampton will need more goals. They have scored 15 in 12 league games so far – which is the second lowest among the top-10 teams. Mauricio Pochettino will look to add a bit of fire power, either in January or at the end of next season and Diego, with his immense experience and creativity, could be the perfect fit for his side.
