Chelsea FC grab a comfortable win over Hull City in an emotional afternoon for Jose Mourinho.
Chelsea 2-0 Hull City
[Oscar 13’, Frank Lampard 25’]
In an emotional return to the Stamford Bridge, Jose Mourinho’s men put up a convincing display against Hull City. Chelsea got off to flier when Oscar gave them the lead in the 13th minute of the game, before Frank Lampard doubled the lead with an wonderful free kick – although there were questions about whether McGregor should have done better in his attempt to stop it. But the Hull City keeper made up for it, with some fine saves though out the match, which kept it to a respectable scoreline. Kevin De Bruyne made his debut for the club as Juan Mata failed to make it to the starting eleven, due to fitness concerns. New signings Andre Schurrle and Marco van Ginkel also made their debut as they came off from the bench in the second half.
Jose Mourinho thanked the fans for the wonderful reception he got from them and haws urged them to get behind the team now.
“It was fantastic, it is something you don’t forget. It makes me think I made the right move by coming back – I am one of them, so I am so pleased and so happy.
“But I think it is enough. I need my team to be supported. I need them to sing my players’ names, I need them to push Chelsea all the way. Enough Mourinho and come on Chelsea.
“I know they love me, that is one of the reasons why I am back, but now it is my time to work for them and for them to support the team.” – The Chelsea manager told the press.
The ‘Special One’ was full of praise for his team and pointed out their high intensity and great movement in the final third. He also insisted that the intensity dropped off in the second half as the players are coming of the back of a busy preseason.
“There is no doubt we deserved the victory. It was a brilliant first half with high intensity, high quality, great movement, great football.
“With the first half, it is no surprise that the second half could not be the same because the first was outstanding.
“The intensity of our game went down because our pre-season was not an easy one and this week most of our players were involved with their international teams.
“The game was always under control, but in the second half the quality of our game went down a bit. I am happy with the victory and I am happy because what we did in the first half was good.
“Our creative players had very good understanding, very good movement and I think the football was brilliant. If we had been 3-0 or 4-0 ahead at half-time it would not be surprising.” – Mourinho added.
Manchester City will open their campaign with their match against Newcastle United tonight, with all their title rivals getting off to a good start, it is now imperative that City get all three points in their opening game as well.
