Chelsea FC are reportedly lining up a transfer move for Galatasaray forward Burak Yilmaz in the summer.
The 27-year-old forward has been in breathtaking form this season. The Turkish international has scored 32 goals in 39 appearances for the Galatasaray as the Aslan went on to the lift the Super Lig trophy, but it was his performances in the Champions League which caught the imagination of many. Burak Yilmaz scored for fun in the biggest competition in Europe and was the joint top scorer with Cristiano Ronald until his side was knocked out by Real Madrid in the quarter-finals. Yilmaz was declared the “player of the group stages” by UEFA.
Burak Yilmaz has been a late riser. For a kid who had so much talent and was one of the most highly rated youngsters back when he played for Antalyaspor and Besiktas, he has had to wait for 2-3 more years than expected to realize his potential. Interestingly, Yilmaz started out in his career as a midfielder at Antalyaspor, scoring goals occasionally, and then played as a right winger during his Besiktas days. It was only at Trabzonspor that he played as an out and out striker, which initiated his wonderful goal scoring form.
The 27-year-old has scored 81 goals in his last 110 appearances for Trabzonspor and Galatasaray. Fatih Terim has even compared him with Ukrainian legend Andriy Shevchenko, who he managed during his Milan days, and has stated that Yilmaz will only get better with age.
“Andriy Shevchenko was the same.
“He is always thinking about scoring one more goal. Loving football is very important. I think he is going to get better and better.” – Terim said.
This season Yilmaz became the only player in Turkish history to play in a Champions League match for the four most successful clubs in Turkey – Fernerbahce, Besiktas, Trabzonspor and Galatasaray. In fact he is only the second player in the history of the game to play for all these four clubs. Even with the arrival of big names like Drogba and Sneijder, the spotlight has been firmly placed on this 27-year-old.
Many European clubs have been monitoring his progress this season and Galatasaray are expected to receive a lot of inquiries in the summer. Manchester United, Napoli, Arsenal and Atletico Madrid have all been linked with a move for the striker this season, and now Chelsea have joined the race as well.
Chelsea are looking to add more fire-power up front as Torres and Ba haven’t been consistent enough. It is believed that incoming manager Jose Mourinho, who saw him up close during Madrid’s quarter-final fixture against Galatasaray, is highly impressed with the Turkish international and wants to have him at Chelsea. Yilmaz’s current contract runs till 2016, hence Galatasaray will demand a high transfer fee for their prized asset. It is believed that the Turkish club will hold on until they receive a bid in excess of £20 million.
Yilmaz for his part has indicated that he is happy at the club and intends to honor his contract, that is unless the clubs decide to sell him.
“I’m really happy here. I have a long-term contract here. If an offer is put on the table then it’s the club’s decision which will matter, not mine.” – The Chelsea target told in an interview few weeks back.
Chelsea have also been linked with Falcao, but they face heavy competition from Monaco and Manchester City in that transfer battle. Yilmaz on the other hand will come at a much cheaper price.
