Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Roman Weidenfeller has urged Robert Lewandowski to snub all interests from other clubs and extend his stay with Die Borussen.
Robert Lewandowski has been the part of one of the most prolonged transfer saga in the past season. The Polish international, who has been one of the key performers for Dortmund in last two seasons, has drawn interest from a lot of other European clubs. But if reports are to be believed, Bayern Munich and Manchester United are the frontrunners in the race for his signature.
But Dortmund goalkeeper, Roman Weidenfeller, has urged his teammate to extend his stay with the club beyond this season. Although he understands that Lewandowski would be important asset for any team to have, he insists that Dortmund is the best place for him.
‘Of course we joke around when we are in different cities in Europe. We make jokes about his next destination but we’re just joking. Honestly, we would like to keep him here.
‘Lewandowski is not only technical, he’s also very quick and has a feeling for goals, so whenever there’s a chance he senses it. Every club would be happy to have a player like him.
‘The best place for Lewandowski is here in Dortmund and we hope to keep him. He grew to become a big player here and he belongs to this team.
‘That’s what makes him so strong and such a strong asset to the team. He should stay because we work as a team and he is such a big part.’ – The Borussia Dortmund veteran was quoted in press.
Back in February, Borussia Dortmund director Michael Zorc disclosed that Lewandowski will not extend his current, which expires in 2014. Dortmund are sure to sell him this summer, instead of losing him for free next season. The German club are already in the market for a new striker and are preparing for life without Lewandowski, so Weidenfeller’s plea might fall to deaf ears.
