Arsenal FC have handed over a trial to highly rated Nigerian defender Godfrey Oboabona.
The 22-year-old was one of the star performers for Nigeria in the recently concluded African Cup Of Nations as the Super Eagles went on to win their third title. Oboaboba, who is the captain of the Nigerian club Sunshine Eagles, was one of the few players who was plying his trade in the Nigerian Premier League and was selected for the national side.
His brilliant performances in the tournament have helped him draw the attention of big European clubs, including Arsenal, and the 22-year-old has now been handed over a trial at the Emirates. Oboabona was delighted with the opportunity to impress someone like Arsene Wenger, but the Nigerian international is keeping his options open before deciding on his future.
“I already have offers from the top five leagues in the world. But like you know the transfer window had closed by the time the Nations Cup ended.
“If I want to make any move now then it would be to an African country, and I don’t want such a move when I have offers from Europe.
“So, I would rather wait until the summer and make the right choice instead of rushing into any move.” – The Arsenal target was quoted in press.
Oboabona’s biggest strength as a defender is his versatility. He started out as a right back for his national side, but has since then moved to a more central role alongside Egwuekwe. He is highly confident, strongly built and extremely hard working as a footballer. His best performance in the African Cup Of Nations was perhaps against the Ivorian side in the Quarter-Final showdown. He handled Didier Drogba with relative ease – something which Arsenal’s defence has failed over the years.
Here is a look at the highly rated defender and what the Arsenal fans can expect from him, if he manages to sign for the Gunners.
