Transfers Latest – Arsenal FC midfielder Jack Wilshere has welcomed rumours linking Wayne Rooney and Gonzalo Higuain to the club, while the Gunners have failed with a bid for Lars Bender.
Jack Wilshere welcomes Wayne Rooney to the club
Wayne Rooney is perhaps the biggest name that has been linked with the Gunners in recent times. Both Arsene Wenger and Ivan Gazidis have indicated their interest in Rooney, who faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford after expressing his desire to leave the club. Rooney-rumours have received mixed reactions from the Arsenal fans – while some would happily welcome him to the Emirates, others are sceptical about him due to his link with United and due to some of the comments he made about the club in the past. But despite his antics, Rooney remains a world-class footballer – there is no two ways about it.
Recent rumours suggested that after securing Higuain, Arsenal’s next target is the Manchester United forward. The Gunners can afford his wage and it is believed that they are prepared to offer him a £175,000 a week contract. It is believed that Rooney will have one final meeting with new manager David Moyes before deciding his future at the club.
Meanwhile, Jack Wilshere is delighted at the fact that Arsenal have been linked with such world class players. The England international believes that with a player like Rooney in the squad, the possibility of winning trophies increases manifolds. When asked about the Rooney rumours, Wilshere said –
“If it happens, it would be amazing.
“He is the type of player who can win you trophies – and just to see his name on the team sheet brings fear to the opposition. We could do with a little more of that.
“You look at the type of players like Higuain we are trying to bring in and you have got to be encouraged.
“I think we need a few more, not to step right into the team, but to add to the squad.” – The Arsenal midfielder told in an interview.
Bayer Leverkusen rejects opening bid for Lars Bender
According to reports in Germany, Arsenal have failed with an opening bid of €23million for German international Lars Bender. The Leverkusen midfielder has been a key performer for the German side for the past three seasons and it was known in advance that they won’t let go of their prized asset so easily.
But Bender could be the perfect player for Arsenal. The Gunners currently lack a proper defensive midfielder in the squad and Bender fits in that role perfectly. He in fact has been one of the best defensive midfielders in the past two seasons in Europe and has been the lynchpin of this Leverkusen side which punched above their weights and finished third in the league last season.
Bayer Leverkusen were quick to react to Arsenal’s interest and have now released a statement where they have virtually indicated that Bender won’t be sold.
“It’s absolutely normal that there has been interest in him because he is a top-level player who is improving.
“But he has a contract until 2017 and he is absolutely happy to stay at Leverkusen.” – A club spokesman told the press.
It will be interesting to see whether Arsenal goes back with an improved offer for the German international, as he has the potential to be a massive addition to the squad.
