Arsenal FC defender Per Mertesacker has dismissed claims that he is looking for a return to Germany.
Per Mertesacker was recently linked with a move back to the Bundesliga with Wolfsburg general manager, Klaus Allofs, publicly revealing the club’s interest in the Arsenal defender. Klaus insisted that if Mertesacker is up for sale then they would make a move for him.
The above statement, coupled with the fact that Arsene Wenger is expected to make some big changes to the squad in the summer – specially to the defence – has fuelled a lot of speculation over Mertesacker’s future at the club, along with the other Arsenal defenders.
But the German international has dismissed those claims stating that Arsene Wenger believes in him and his ability and he isn’t leaving the Emirates any time soon.
‘A change is not an issue.
‘Our manager Arsene Wenger gives me absolute confidence, I play every game. I can think of nothing else, but to stay at Arsenal.’ – Mertesacker was quoted in German media.
While Arsene Wenger is sure to make changes in the defence next season, it is unlikely that Mertesacker will be sold. The 28-year-old has easily been the most consistent of the three center-backs Arsenal have used this season. In fact it is Thomas Vermaelen, whose future looks to be in doubt at the Emirates. The Arsenal captain was dropped from the starting eleven in last two matches and Koscielny has taken his place in the team.
With Arsenal pulling off two back to back clean sheets against a strong attacking side like Bayern Munich and against Swansea City, it looks unlikely that Vermaelen will get back into the starting line-up anytime soon.
Although Mertesacker’s lack of pace has been exposed at times this season, it has been mostly due to the fact that Arsenal have deployed an extremely high line in defence throughout this season. Yet, the German has managed to adapt to life in the Premier League and has improved a lot from his performances in the last season.
